The Superior Court of Contra Costa County is currently recruiting self-motivated, energetic individuals to be General Maintenance Workers. Persons appointed to this classification will be assigned to the Court’s Facilities Unit and will perform a wide range of duties associated with the general maintenance and repair of court facilities countywide. The Court presently intends to fill one full-time position, but additional positions may be filled in the future using the eligibility list generated by this recruitment.

Examples of Duties

General Maintenance Workers must be able to work independently, and must possess good interpersonal skills. Persons selected must have the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and must be able to work in confined spaces and on rooftops, ladders and scaffolding. The nature of the work performed requires travel between court locations on a daily basis. Some night, early morning and weekend overtime work is required. There will be emergency situations when incumbents will be required to report to work off-hours with minimal notice. Regular and punctual attendance is essential.

Typical tasks include:

  • Carpentry:
    Makes and installs shelves, cabinets, and chair rails; hangs pictures and paintings, bulletin boards, and drawing boards; repairs scratches and scuffs in furniture; repairs and adjusts windows, doors and cabinet drawers; cleans up and replaces broken glass.

  • Electrical: Replaces broken or defective light switches and power outlets; replaces inoperable light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and starters; replaces light fixtures.

  • Masonry: Patches broken asphalt and concrete and wall surfaces; replaces loose bricks and tiles.

  • Painting: Paints interior walls, ceilings, shelves, cabinets and furniture; exterior painting of parking lot stripes and parking bumpers, wooden fences, doors and trim.

  • Plumbing: Replaces or repairs defective flush valves, faucet sets, faucet and toilet washers and packing; stops leaks by tightening joints; plunges clogged toilets and clears obstructions from pipelines.

  • Miscellaneous: Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor repairs; reads blueprints and assembly instructions; moves and transports a variety of materials and equipment; uses handcarts, ladders and may operate a forklift or other motorized equipment; uses hand tools and operates a variety of power tools; operates and performs routine maintenance on motor vehicles and light trucks; plan, coordinate, and complete annual multi-department, county wide moves, typically at year end; various aspects of office redesign including drawing, procuring, assembling, building, and installing modular and traditional office furniture; work closely with IT department to coordinate office moves and redesigns; coordinate with outside vendors to provide building access and to work on projects; organize, plan, and design layout for special events; and install and mount television brackets and televisions.


The IDEAL CANDIDATE should have the following knowledge and abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Techniques and methods used in building maintenance.

  • Basic comprehension of blueprints and schematics.

  • Correct lifting procedures and safe moving of furniture and equipment.

  • Basic English usage.

  • Procedures and practices of safe motor vehicle operation.


Ability to:
  • Perform general repair work.

  • Read and understand blueprints, assembly drawings, technical and equipment manuals.

  • Operate various machinery including hand and power tools.

  • Operate a motor vehicle in a safe and responsible manner.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively in English.

  • Carry out duties in accordance with policy, procedure and scope of responsibilities.

  • Maintain confidentiality of Court documents and records.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with judicial officers, court and county employees and others encountered in the course of work.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Adapt to changing circumstances as conditions dictate.


Minimum/Desirable Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

License Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, class C or higher, by date of appointment.


Experience
:

Level I: Three (3) years of experience in building maintenance, building trades, general construction, warehouse supply, or a related occupational field.


Level II:
Five (5) years of experience in building maintenance, building trades, general construction, warehouse supply, or a related occupational field.


Physical Demands:
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, crawling, occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Conditions of Employment
Successful completion of fingerprint and a criminal record background check is required prior to appointment and is a condition of employment.

All employees of the court who operate a vehicle on court business must certify they possess a valid California Driver’s License and required levels of automobile insurance.

Convictions
Felony and misdemeanor convictions MAY BE disqualifying for employment with the court. The court will assess the nature and gravity of the offense, the time that has elapsed since the offense was committed, and the nature of the job duties to be performed.

Employment Eligibility
In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all persons hired after November 6, 1986, are required to present to the Court, at the time of appointment, original documents which show satisfactory proof of: 1.) identity and 2.) U.S. Citizenship or a legal authorization to work in the United States.
