Job description
Duties
- Provide overhaul and repair work on heavy duty mobile equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.
- Disassemble engines and determine the extent of the repairs required.
- Repair and/or rebuild engines and components.
- Diagnose and repair fuel system failures.
- Repair suspension and brake systems.
- Repair or replace transmissions on heavy mobile equipment and vehicles.
- Handle and process hazardous materials/waste products from maintenance/repair operations.
- Operate a government motor vehicle (passenger car/truck) transporting one or more passengers (up to 6) on at least a weekly basis.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires working in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods and requires frequent bending, crouching and climbing. The employee is required to work on the top of and under vehicles in cramped and awkward positions.
- Incumbent is subject to the hazard of the mechanics trade such as cuts, burns, bruises, fumes and noise.
- Incumbent may be required to work outside in all weather conditions where vehicles and equipment are covered with snow, ice or mud.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 75 lbs. in the regular performance of duties and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
- This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Class A endorsement to operate vehicles.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
- This position requires the incumbent to attend and complete an introductory course in hazardous waste management within six months of assignment and attend annual hazardous waste management refresher courses.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate your ability to diagnose malfunctions and make repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles and heavy special purpose vehicles which have mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric systems, controls, or features not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary transport trucks and buses; troubleshoot and repair the full range of systems on the vehicles or equipment or repairing one type of major system (such as cross-drive transmissions) on one of the vehicles described at the next higher level (bulldozers, road graders, heavy construction and earth moving vehicles, heavy combat equipment; and heavy special purpose vehicles). - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
