Department Description

Phoenix Cluster is a large administrative cluster providing administrative and technical support to the over 600+ faculty, staff, and students of Entomology, Nematology and Plant Pathology.

This position is part of a team of personnel providing IT support services within Phoenix. Will work with a diverse staff in Phoenix to provide IT support services necessary to further teaching and research activities.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the IT Manager and the lead of the System Support Team Supervisor, provide a variety of computing technical support and services to Phoenix staff, faculty, and affiliates of the Entomology & Nematology, Plant Pathology departments, and Programs within. The incumbent is expected to acquire the skills and knowledge to perform more advanced work following an agreed upon time in position, through defined on-the-job training and development planning. Troubleshoot problems and engineer sustainable solutions with OS, applications, connectivity, and security at the technology and operational level. Implement and maintain security configurations to support Campus Cybersecurity guidelines. Research, learn, and document solutions for technical problems. Test software and hardware to assess fitness for purpose. Write and maintain technical documentation for both support staff and clients. Serve as augment to web and system administration support. Maintain incident and service request management documentation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sit at various computer terminals for extended periods, using multiple monitors, keyboards or mouse.
  • Frequently required to be able to crawl, crouch, bend, kneel, climb, reach and stoop with or without assistance.
  • Full range of motion of head, hands, arms and legs.
  • Walk frequently to/from various site locations that may be within a 2 mile radius of your primary office location in various weather conditions.
  • Dexterity and ability to lift, push, pull, move and manipulate computing equipment and surrounding office furniture weighing above 200 lbs. with assistance or up to 40 lbs. independently.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work in various biological and chemical work areas (daily) requiring lab safety training and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Work at multiple primary office locations and dynamic work schedules as business needs require. To include changing primary workstations several times a day.
  • Travel to satellite buildings on and off campus for supported IT Service on a daily basis. Occasional travel for training activities.
  • Ability to adjust work schedule as needed to ensure work tasks are completed.
  • Be able to work on-campus work-site at least 100% of the total work hours required even during reduced operations, pandemic or natural disaster as an identified essential employee.
  • Work occasional evenings and weekends for system deployment and maintenance activities, and project priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Minimum License/Certification:

  • Have a valid CA driver license

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience providing great Customer Service in a high-tempo busy environment with frequent interruptions. Learning and applying various technological solutions without formal training, standard operating procedures, documentation or paid enterprise solutions. Demonstrating consistent professional high quality performance and attention to detail. Consistently maintain complete and accurate system hardware, software licensing, network and work records.
  • Experience demonstrating high level of organization, consistent, accurate and prompt time management, ability to prioritize various concurrent projects while being highly productive.
  • Experience with consistent high-performing on-site work, ability installing, configuring, securing, troubleshooting and managing various server equipment, client hardware, services and applications across Windows, Linux, Mac platforms in a heterogeneous networked and physical environment to include outdoor field installation.
  • Experience with consistent high-level proficient work demonstrating the ability as a technical subject matter expertise, providing management with viable solutions and successfully executing them independently and with a team.
  • Work experience to include independently diagnosing and resolving complex issues involving various hardware, networks (various VLANs/Firewalls), Microsoft Active Directory, software conflicts, failures, errors, and incompatibilities in a timely manner with non-warrantied computing hardware.
  • Experience programming, creating and maintaining websites, to include troubleshooting applications issues and resolving them to completion.

Preferred Education/Experience:

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Demonstrated knowledge and effective application of Departmental, UC, Federal and State: Communication, IT security policies and procedures.
  • Proficient with Bigfix, Infoblox, Microsoft Active Directory, HyperV, Powershell, SCCM, WSUS
  • Proficient with Cloud/Hybrid Cloud hosting technologies like: Office365, Box.com, Azure, AWS, dropbox, various Google Apps, Aggie Video
  • Proficient with a variety of Content Management Systems (CMS) such as: Concrete5, Wordpress, UC Davis SiteFarm, UC Davis Canvas, Kaltura, UC ANR Sitebuider, Plone, and Drupal
