Position Title: Instructional Assistant - Pre-Kindergarten Virginia Pre-School Initiative (VPI)

ay Grade: 6 Period of Employment: 9.5 months Description Approved/ Revised: 6/2020 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Supervised by and/or Reports to: Classroom Instructor, School Administrators

General Responsibilities: Works with the classroom teacher to provide a learning environment that promotes social, physical, and instructional growth for 4-year-old at-risk students. Supports teachers in the Footsteps2Brilliance® learning platform to connect the school and home.


Essential Duties:

  • Supports the classroom instructor by assisting students as directed.
  • Performs assigned duties related to the instructional program and the student learning process.
  • Assists the teacher in all facets of daily classroom management including bus monitoring, food service, field trips, etc.
  • Escorts students when required.
  • Helps prepare the classroom for daily instruction and helps clean up the classroom at the end of the day.
  • Provides care and supervision for the students.
  • Locates and prepares materials for daily class work.
  • Attends home visits with the classroom teacher.
  • Assists the instructor with creating an inviting and engaging classroom environment.
  • Performs clerical duties as assigned by the teacher.
  • Collaborates with teacher on behavior plans and their implementation.
  • Participates and assists the teacher with Parent Workshops.
  • Leads small group lessons.
  • Monitors and supports positive student behavior and classroom environment by using the tenants of “Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS)” to ensure students are safe, respectful, and responsible.
  • Completes proper training and maintains certifications, such as CPR.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of the basic needs of young students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish skills preferred.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents.
  • Ability to maintain student behavior and maintain classroom instruction during the teacher’s absence.
  • General knowledge of community.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to lift and assist students as needed.
  • Serves as a role model.


Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a minimum of 60 college credit hours; or an Associate’s Degree or higher; or have passed the ParaPro Assessment.
  • Experience in an educational setting and/or prior teaching/instructional experience preferred.


Physical Requirements:


Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physically capable of effectively using and operating various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
