JOB TITLE:
Animal Care and Laboratory Coordinator

JOB PURPOSE:
The Bruns and Schmitt Labs are interdisciplinary research groups in the Division of Kinesiology & Health at the University Of Wyoming. The Animal Care and Laboratory Coordinator will be an integral member of a biomedical research team. Under the direction of the Principal Investigators, the Animal Care and Laboratory Coordinator will manage and supervise the day-to-day operations in a moderate sized laboratory including care, maintenance and husbandry of a mouse vivarium. The Animal Care and Laboratory Coordinator will work mostly independently with minimal supervision.

The candidate for this position should have hands-on experience in managing people, problem-solving; using technical skills, strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; verbal and written communication abilities; ability to adapt to and effectively manage changes in a dynamic environment; and have a passion for scientific research.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage day-to-day operations of a moderate-sized mouse vivarium including: cage changing, cage washing, animal husbandry (breeding, weaning), animal identification and genotyping.

Maintain laboratory equipment, databases, and protocols.

Purchase animal care supplies and maintain vivarium budget to include processing of expense reports

Assist PIs in preparation and renewal of animal protocols.

Comply with all safety standards and ensure laboratory and personnel compliance.

Plan and perform research tasks of limited complexity requiring initiative and judgment in applying basic knowledge and understanding scientific theory.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks.

Supervise aides, technicians, and students including orientation and training of new personnel as needed.

This position includes working over holidays and vacations (spring break).

Physical Requirements

Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat.

Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders.

Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Associate’s degree in a related field

Experience:
1-year work-related experience

Work-related experience in animal care in pet store, veterinary clinic, or laboratory setting

Education (bachelor’s or associate’s degree) in in biological, chemical, or physical sciences
