Job Summary
The Laboratory Manager will manage the laboratory facilities and instrumentation for a PI's research group. Lab specializes in stable isotope analysis of organic and inorganic molecules from a variety of biological and geological samples. The successful candidate will be someone who can understand and engage in the scientific research of the group on one hand, while also providing administrative, managerial, and organizational capabilities.
Essential Job Duties
- Manages the operation and administration of PI's laboratory facilities.
- Installs, calibrates, troubleshoots, and repairs equipment and instrumentation; schedules and works with outside technicians when required for installation, repairs, or upgrades.
- Process and analyses samples for PI.
- Maintains records of the use, calibration, and repair of analytical instrumentation.
- Contributes to the design and modification of experimental techniques, equipment, and procedures; documents and communicates these procedures in written and electronic formats.
- Trains new users in the use of experimental techniques and analytical instrumentation.
- Administers purchase of equipment and supplies; maintains contact with vendors and conducts product searches to determine availability and cost of equipment/parts; assists in forecasting and planning for future equipment/resource needs.
- Serves as lab safety officer, in charge of chemical hygiene and safety training, waste disposal, and maintaining PPE.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- B.S. or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Earth Science or related science field.
- 2 years of experience working in a chemical laboratory environment.
- Basic knowledge of organic chemistry, stable isotope geochemistry, electronics.
- Aptitude for troubleshooting and fixing equipment and instrumentation; capable of basic laboratory chemical work; quantitative data analysis.
- Works well with others and highly organized.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. in analytical chemistry or isotope geochemistry.
- At least 3 years in a mass spectrometry (especially IRMS) laboratory.
- Prior experience making stable isotope measurements; ability to operate and repair GC/MS, LC/MS, EA, and IRMS instruments; organic extractions and sample cleanup.
