Purpose of this Role
United Way of the Columbia-Willamette is hiring a Lead Community Researcher to lead ten Community Researchers as part of a neighborhood survey project for the Albina-Rockwood Promise Neighborhood Initiative (ARPNI). ARPNI is led by Self-Enhancement, Inc., in partnership with six community organizations: Albina Head Start, Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization, Latino Network, Metropolitan Family Service, Native American Youth and Family Center, and United Way of the Columbia-Willamette.
The purpose of the neighborhood survey is to gather data about the experiences of residents in the Albina and Rockwood neighborhoods (located in Portland, Oregon) to learn more about the strengths and needs of the communities served by ARPNI. The information collected will be used to enhance current ARPNI programming and identify new opportunities for future programming.
The survey will be conducted in-person and administered to a random selection of residents in both the Albina and Rockwood neighborhoods. The Lead Community Researcher will work with ten Community Researchers to work in teams of two to collect data from residents at residents’ homes. Researchers will follow a survey protocol and use tablets to record, share, and access information.
Surveying will take place at a variety of times, including evenings and weekends. The Community Researchers will be involved in three phases of activities:
1. Training in safety, ethics, procedures, and teamwork required to conduct door-to-door personal survey interviews (1-2 days)
2. Surveying in Albina and Rockwood neighborhoods (8-9 weeks)
3. Data review and sense-making process as a team (1-3 days)
Key Accountabilities
- Participate in a survey training for 1-2 days where the needed skills will be explained and practiced.
- Follow the survey protocol and conduct the survey within assigned communities and timelines.
- Record responses (enter information into computerized tracking systems, catalogue who has participated)
- Consistently communicate with the survey coordinator on progress and any concerns arising during surveying.
- Create a welcoming atmosphere for participants, such that they feel valued and appreciated for their time and for sharing their experiences.
- Engage in sense-making sessions where we will discuss the findings from the survey project.
- Complete training on Mandatory Reporting procedures and obtain a certification to be a Mandatory Reporter in the State of Oregon.

- Five or six of the researchers hired need to be bilingual in Arabic, Russian, Somali, Spanish and/or Vietnamese. Please identify your language capacity in your application.
- Able to carry on conversations easily and connect people to each other; able to easily start conversations
- Able to work variable hours, including evenings and weekends; adjust to flexible work schedule and team needs
- Must be able to travel to various sites outside the United Way offices
- Physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position
Education, Skills, Experience, and Training Required for this Position
- Work or lived experience in either the Albina neighborhood or Rockwood neighborhood (preferred but not required).
- Understands that people of color hold assets that are of value to the broader community and its economic vitality.
- Understands racism and the ways that it affects the experiences of people of color.
- Multicultural experience; experience or ability to engage with people from cultures different than your own.
Technical Knowledge
- Must be able to use a smartphone and/or tablet.
- Experience with office software like Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, or Google Documents and Sheets
Physical Requirements
- Regularly works in outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be able to move about outside. Walking from house to house may be required up to 70% of the time.
- Regularly spends time in environments with moderate noise level.
