The Department of General Services is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I for the Facility Maintenance Division that will work with the maintenance team located at 7 Venues. This position is critical to the City of Norfolkâs facilities. This job includes completing a full spectrum of maintenance requirements. It includes preparations for events and general maintenance which promotes a comfortable and safe environment for our citizens
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provides support for special events by maintaining, delivering, and setting up bleachers and barricades at designated locations. Removes, inspects, and returns items to storage locations after event.
- Constructs, maintains, inspects, repairs, and installs various interior building components and systems including but not limited to walls, doors, windows, floors, ceilings, stairs, cabinets, and countertops.
- Constructs, maintains, inspects, repairs, and installs various exterior building components and systems including but not limited to roofs, windows, doors, siding, decks, handrails, balusters, entrance ramps, and steps.
- Prepares various interior/exterior surfaces for painting, staining, or coating.
- Setting up/taking down of extension ladders, folding ladders, and scaffolding to ensure a safe workplace.
- Fabricates, maintains, inspects, repairs, and installs various types of interior and exterior signage.
- Repairs, installs, and removes modular furniture system components, file cabinets, partitions, and other office case goods and appointments. Moves from building to building.
- Performs maintenance support for emergency response team which responds for removal of ice, snow, and storm debris.
- Operates forklifts, pickup trucks, and stake body trucks.
- Ability and knowledge to safely use and maintain the serviceable condition of various hand and power tools employed in building maintenance.
- Ability to work in a team environment and follow written and verbal instructions and assist other trades when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Required:
- One year of experience as a building helper or apprentice.
- Must have ability to use power tools, generators, and a variety of hand tools.
- Must have ability to read work orders, safety data sheets, and instructional manuals; perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; write general correspondence, and fill out work orders and other items.
- Must be able to exercise professional judgment in selecting proper choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures.
- Must have the ability to work well with others both inside and outside the organization as well as vendors and suppliers.
- Valid Driver's License required. A DMV transcript dated within 30 days will be required if selected for hire.
- May require a Forklift Operator's License within six months of appointment.
- This position is designated as Essential and may be required to report to work during City closures due to inclement weather and other emergencies

Work Schedule:
- Monday - Friday, 7:00AM - 3:30PM, 40 hours per week
- Occasional overtime
- Shift Schedule that rotates every 4 months to include weekends, some holidays, and evening hours will be required.
