Position Specific Responsibilities
The Director of Student-Athlete Mental Health and Performance will be embedded in Athletics (ICAA) and support the holistic development of Wichita State student-athletes. The position will provide Division 1 student-athletes with psychological counseling related to their performance, assist student-athletes in the development of mental strategies to overcome setbacks and injuries, and provide performance-related programming within the team setting. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to build effective, collaborative relationships throught the Department of Athletics and provide prevention and education programming and consultation to coaches, administrators and students. Provision of general mental health conseling, including assessment of the unique mental health needs of student-athletes and development of approprioate interventions, group therapy, and crisis assessment and intervention within a diverse student population are components of this position. This position is also responsible for screening student-athletes for learning disorders through use of standardized assessment instruments on a yearly basis. This is followed by coordinating referrals for comprehensive sassessment of student-athletes identified at high risk for such disorders. This position serves as a liaison between campus CAPS (Counseling and Prevention Services) and Athletics. Opportunities to provide clinical supervision to graduate level trainees in the form of one-on-one supervision, group supervision and provision of training workshops and seminars are available. Start date may be flexible based upon selected candidate availability.

Summary of Responsibilities

Manages, coordinates, and administers the day-to-day activities of one (1) or more functional areas or clinical counseling services and programs. Assists with the development of department objectives that align with University goals.



Essential Functions

Coordinates clinical supervision of staff services and program development.
Oversees the implementation or one (1) or more clinical programs and/or services.
Provides psychological services, including but not limited to, individual, couples, and group therapy; crisis intervention services; and psychological assessments and evaluations.
Collaborates with University departments and organizations on outreach programs and services.

Requirements

Minimum Education

Doctorate degree in counseling or clinical psychology by hire date



Preferred Education

Minimum Experience

Three (3) years of experience in college counseling or related field, with one (1) year of experience in a supervisory role



Preferred Experience
  • Counseling credential/license
  • Psychologist (PhD/PsyD)
  • Currently licensed or license eligible within 12 months of start.
  • APA-approved doctoral program and APA-accredited doctoral internship.
  • Credentialed or eligible for the Certified Mental Performance Consultant Certificate

  • One year of experience providing mental health services and performance-enhancing services to athletes.

  • Experience in a university counseling center and/or athletics setting is strongly preferred.

  • Exceptional skills in working with diverse students, a diverse staff, and working collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with peers as well as clients.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of sport psychology and university counseling. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with peers as well as clients .

Licenses, Certificates and Registrations

Licensed in the mental health field in the state of Kansas, or eligible and actively pursuing licensure
