About the position

In collaboration with members of the health care team, the Medical Assistant (MA) will provide assistance to physicians, APPs, residents/fellows, and clinical staff to support the delivery of timely quality patient care in the ambulatory setting. The MA will provide care in accordance with the Louisiana Nurse Practice Act, approved MA standards of care, state regulations, and hospital/clinic accreditation standards. The MA will uphold the mission, vision, and values of UMCNO and will adhere to the philosophy, policies, and procedures of UMCNO Nursing Services.

The MA works under the supervision of the RN Supervisor and/or RN/LPN Lead.

Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program, preferred.

1 year of experience in a health care related field or completion of CNA, PCT, or MA training/certificate program.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support-HCP.

Responsibilities

Completes pre-visit chart review to ensure all clinical documentation including requested medical records, labs, imaging and ordered test results are available and in the chart for patient appointments. Rooms patients in a timely manner updating in the EHR the patient's medical history, medications, required patient questionnaires and health screening questionnaires as appropriate. Prepares patient for examinations, tests, or treatments. Assist patient with dressing, transfer to exam table and ambulation as needed. Assist physicians, APPs, Residents/Fellows, and nurses as needed during exams/procedures. Prepares specimens for lab as needed. Cleans and stocks exam room/treatment room. Perform EKGs when applicable.

Prior to patient appointment, verifies appropriate equipment/instruments is available for the planned exam/procedure. Routinely checks supply rooms for expired items. Follows established SPD guidelines/standards, maintains, cleans, and transports procedure instrument and equipment as appropriate.

Demonstrate appropriate customer service skills. Communicate effectively with patient, families and clinical staff. Escalate patient concerns or complaints to RN Supervisor and/or lead nurse or provider as necessary.
