Summary:
Performs variety of routine and complex laboratory procedures under supervision using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist physician in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Exercise professional judgment in order to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in efficient manner.
Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education Required (either A or B):
A. Bachelor of Science degree listing one of the required areas of study (Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science) if degree does not list area of study transcripts must be submitted for equivalency evaluation.
I. Acceptable transcripts must include(1 or 2 below):
1.Sixty (60) semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination, OR
2.One (1) year in approved program or equivalent with certification/registry with an accredited recognized agency or organization (e.g. ASCP, AMT, etc.- ASCP and NCA merged 10/23/09).
OR
B. One (1) year clinical laboratory experience and categorical certification from ASCP BOR in area of experience

2.Certifications:
- Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or certification eligible from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). preferred.
Experience & Training Required:
- Ability to read, comprehend and follow detailed laboratory procedures, protocols, and instructions.
- Use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department
- Minimum of 12 continuing education credits are required to be completed each calendar year for continued employment.
Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate and troubleshoot sophisticated equipment, identify, and correct technical problems.
- Ability to work under stress, communicate test results to physicians, nursing units, and/or other authorized personnel.
- Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the customer service policy
- Use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department
- Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity.
- Demonstrates annual successful completion of all regulatory required testing related competencies.

- Sedentary: Exerts up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently.
