Job Description:

The Part- Time Disabilities Support Services Assistant (DSS Assistant) works with students with disabilities on developing successful strategies to manage the academic demands of college. An academic coaching model is utilized to help students to discover their individual learning strengths and to become active learners. Throughout the semester the student and DSS Assistant will meet on a weekly or other scheduled basis to focus on the following areas:

  • Setting goals
  • Identifying obstacles that impede progress
  • Establishing priorities and routines
  • Developing time management skills
  • Improving organizational skills
  • Learning study skills and test-taking strategies
  • Refining note-taking skills
  • Implementing active reading strategies
  • Reviewing developmental math concepts
  • Balancing academic, work, and family commitments
  • Strengthening self-advocacy skills

The DSS Assistant provides a supportive environment to facilitate positive change and empowers students by helping them build self-confidence along with increasing their motivation and ownership of success.



Requirements:

Education:

  • Master's degree strongly preferred in education, psychology, social sciences, social work, counseling, or any related field. Bachelor's degree required.

Experience:

  • Preference given to candidates with disability service experience, and/or higher education experience.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, college policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of disabilities and how they affect college life.
  • Knowledge of current laws applying to post-secondary service for students with disabilities.
  • Skill in the use of computer applications specifically Microsoft Office Suite/365. Ability to learn other software as necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with college faculty and staff, students and the general public.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
  • Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to work unsupervised and take initiative to realize/recognize needed steps and respond in a timely and effective manner


Additional Information:

Pay Rate: $30.03/hr. @ 18.5/hrs. week, Temporary part time position for transition period in Disability Support Services office. Position could be extended if transition period is extended.
