Payroll Assistant

Independence Excavating is looking to hire a full-time Payroll Assistant in our Independence location. The Payroll Assistant will help build upon an already strong accounting and payroll team to help support future growth. This position will report to the Payroll Manager.

A typical day looks like:

• Entering and reviewing weekly timesheets, per diem, travel pay and assistance with processing weekly payroll check runs
• Setting up new hires and maintaining existing employee master files
• Understanding of Davis Bacon requirements and preparing and filing weekly certified payrolls
• Assisting with organizing union agreements and updating union payroll tracking sheets
• Managing and understanding periodic union time reporting requirements
• Providing support in maintaining annual benefit elections and associated payroll deductions
• Scanning and organizing past payroll records, while maintaining current recordkeeping requirements
• Delivering audit support of payroll records when necessary
• Providing back-up to the Payroll Manager and other staff as required
• Other duties as assigned

Do you have what it takes?

• 2-3 years’ experience in accounting and/or payroll, prior work in construction a plus
• Proficient with MS Office Suite - Advanced knowledge of Excel (Vlookups, formulas, etc.) a plus
• Accounting software knowledge - Viewpoint Spectrum, HCSS HeavyJob or Equipment 360 knowledge a plus
• Curious mind asking “why” with the ability to solve practical problems and deal with variety of situations
• Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally (both verbal and written) with internal staff and employees
• Able to multi-task in a fast pace, demanding work environment
• Must have strong organizational skills to handle the variety of tasks assigned
• Prioritizes own responsibilities with the ability to multitask
• Must always exhibit a positive attitude and be a quick learner with a thirst for knowledge
