Job description
The 911 PST is responsible for receiving both, emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance from the public and providing critical information to Police/Fire/EMS. They provide professional quality service to city residents and the general public. Operators are calm under pressure while assessing situations, collecting information, and providing pre-arrival instructions to callers. This position requires the ability to "multi-task" as well as strong communication and analytical skills. This position also requires the ability to work shift work. This is a very rewarding and satisfying profession for many, as it provides a way to help others in our community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is a list of the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements:
- Receives and prioritizes all requests for service and dispatches appropriate emergency personnel, Police, Fire.
- Transmits other official messages via the radio or paging system respectively.
- Maintains complete status of all on-duty police and fire-rescue personnel including locations and activities.
- Constant monitoring of the radio and immediately respond to all requests for assistance or service.
- Properly fulfills requests from emergency personnel regarding support services.
- Maintains appropriate communications with other Public Safety agencies.
- Review bulletins, requests for service and other information received from criminal justice agencies via teletype and promptly take appropriate action.
- Be familiar with jurisdictional boundaries, as well as landmarks, public buildings and waterways within Indian Harbour Beach.
- Disseminate information received over the National Warning System Terminal from the National Weather Service to all appropriate personnel.
- Make entries, inquiries, cancellations, and modifications of records in various systems and databases such as the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Florida Crime Information Center, Stolen Vehicle File, Stolen License Plate File, Stolen-Missing Gun File, Stolen Article File, Wanted Person File, Stolen Boat File, etc.
- Must condense large amounts of information into readable, sensibly typed remarks in a timely manner and have the ability to recall numerous acronyms and codes essential to appropriate call processing
- Deal with sensitive information in a discreet and professional manner.
- Maintains high level of customer service.
- Ability to manage negative comments and feedback from the public.
- Able to formulate and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with fellow employees, representatives from other departments, and supervisors.
- Ability to type min. 35 words per minute. Typing test can be completed at any Career Source Brevard location and submitted along with employment application and resume.
- Required to work shift work, which may include days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must be dependable and punctual. Attendance is an essential function of this job.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High School graduate or equivalent diploma required.
- Clerical Experience is useful but not required.
- PRIOR EXPERIENCE "PREFERRED."
- Must successfully complete the State of Florida Public Safety Telecommunications Certification training and exam. Training and exam fees paid by this agency.
Salary Range: $17.86 to $29.65/hour

Other Requirements:
Must be able to successfully pass CritiCall. The computerized CritiCall pre-employment test measures the underlying skills and abilities a person needs to possess prior to any training they might receive if they are hired as a 911 dispatcher, including the ability to effectively navigate and use a computer. A test taker does not need to possess any specialized dispatcher knowledge or training to be able to read, understand, or answer the test items. CritiCall tests actual skills and computer-related multi-tasking abilities required in the dispatching field.

Must successfully pass a pre-employment background, including a CVSA, and drug screen. Must possess a valid and active Driver's License.
