The City of Brentwood seeks a customer service minded professional with excellent communication skills to join its team as a Reference Librarian at the John P. Holt Brentwood Library.
The John P. Holt Brentwood Library provides access to over 165,000 books and other materials, including audiobooks, DVDs, music CDs and online resources. With the mission of being a vibrant and engaging community center for lifelong learning and the arts, the Library continues to be an eclectic resource available to the City of Brentwood community. Situated in a beautiful park setting and bordered by a walking trail and arboretum, the John P. Holt Brentwood Library is known as the crown jewel of the City of Brentwood.
The Reference Librarian I is responsible for collection development, reference services and user instruction to the community as part of the library reference services team. This is a part-time position that includes responsibilities as the Librarian in Charge on weekends as well as some weekdays. Schedule is 25-29 hours weekly.
- Provides professional reference services and support to patrons using knowledge of reference sources.
- Performs collection management activities based on knowledge of the community needs, usage levels, and relevance of materials.
- Assists in development, selection, acquisition, and weeding of the library’s physical and digital collections.
- Manages a material budget by following the City of Brentwood purchasing guidelines
- Assists the Assistant Director and Reference Services Manager in the promotion, maintenance, display, and digitization of local history and special collections materials according to archival standards.
- Builds finding aids and LibGuides related to the special collection and local history; promotes and assists patrons in the use of the library’s memory lab as requested.
- Supervises building operations as the person in charge, including but not limited to closing procedures, handling patron complaints, explaining and enforcing library policies and procedures to the public when a person in charge is necessary, and regularly serving as the closing person in charge a minimum of one night per week.
- Keeps abreast of new titles and topics in literature and provides readers’ advisory services (in person and by phone) by recommending books and assisting readers in locating titles of interest using the library’s resources.

ALA-Accredited MLS required but will accept candidate graduating in May 2023 with ALA-Accredited MLS with the understanding of submitting graduation certificate. Course work and/or experience in technology, electronic databases, and the internet required. Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of library science. Demonstrated ability to create/design web pages/tutorials and to quickly learn new technologies and skills strongly preferred. Familiarity with a broad range of electronic databases and electronic search strategies preferred. Familiarity with emerging information and web technologies preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines which includes a computer, printer, facsimile machine, copy machine, microform reader/printer, calculator, telephone, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary to medium work.

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures related to the job of Reference Librarian I. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people (i.e. staff, supervisors, general public, and officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Must be able to provide both individual and group instruction and reference services. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency related to the job of Reference Librarian I.
