ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate patient care through a continuum and facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Triages and/or assesses current condition and treatment priority of patients presenting to Orthopedic and Podiatry Clinics.
  • Assists in the management and follow-up of all types of patients seen for the Total Joint Replacement Program
  • Coordinates the initiation and follow-up of appropriate referrals relative to special needs. Assess patient needs telephonically and/or in person.
  • Assists with surgery in the Operating Room and in minor procedures in clinic on an as needed basis.
  • Manages surgical scheduling (utilizing S3—surgery scheduling system) for Orthopedic and Podiatric surgeries; maintains appropriate surgical load for given provider on any given day, including filling unexpected gaps in the in-surgery schedule.
  • Orders X-rays, MRI’s, and other studies as instructed by the treating clinician. Responsible for safe, quality nursing care IAW current practical standards in conjunctions with DHA, Army, and Air Force policies.
  • Plans and coordinates activities with other health care team members to improve efficiency and effectiveness of Orthopedic/Podiatry clinics' functions to include meeting patient multidisciplinary needs.
  • Screens established patients and telephone calls to assess the severity of the patient’s condition and the need for physician intervention. Communicates with physicians regarding determinations and situations, documents events appropriately.
  • Prescribes and communicates treatment plans and patient teaching in accordance with established protocols. Collects and assesses significant patient history information and performs all necessary patient teaching.
  • Ensures for proper documentation of procedures/treatments within the prescribed timeframe.
  • Ensures all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.
  • Ensures preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed. Ensures medication/supplies are replenished.
  • Participates in the newcomer’s orientation and completes annual training, as required.
  • May be required to work various shifts or augment clinical nursing support during the absence of other team nurses due to illness, leave or deployment,
  • Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Must follow site required health screening and immunization requirements.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from a National League of Nursing (NLN) or from an American Academy College of Nursing accredited college. A nursing program from a college/ University accredited by the national nursing accreditation agencies of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Hold a current, active, full and unrestricted Registered Nurses (RN) licensed in a nurse compact state license or Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) or have a license from any United States jurisdiction.
  • Hold a national or state nursing license that is valid and current with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions. License must be unencumbered and remain in effect during contract employment.
  • Must have a minimum of twelve (12) months experience working in the setting of ICU or ED.
  • Must have experience using pharmacological agents inpatient treatment and Cardiology testing, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations.
  • Must have a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate by the American Heart Association, advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).This certification must be current at all times.
  • Must have experience with the basic requirements for proper documentation of patient care including medications given, nursing procedures, acknowledgment of teaching, and follow up care.
  • Strongly preferred working knowledge of the military health care system including TRICARE health benefits.
  • Excellent oral communication skills for patient/family education and telephone triage of patients. Telephone and in-person assessment/evaluation includes the determination of optimal time and location for patient management (ER, clinic, homecare) and follow-up care as required.
  • Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity, including telephone contacts, in accordance with requirements and established timelines.
  • Knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform nursing assignments, utilizing nursing judgment and approved telehealth/triage protocols for assessing pediatric, adolescent, adults, obstetrics, and geriatric patients, as appropriate. Utilizes the nursing process as a basis for professional practice.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders/conditions and disease processes across the lifespan, as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of preventive health schedules, procedures, processes and education methods.
  • Knowledge of disease management and population health principles.
  • Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used inpatient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required. Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including disease progress, acknowledgment of teaching, and follow up care.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).
