Position Summary
Genomatica is seeking a Scientist I with experience in analytical chemistry or related field to work as a member of the Analytical Sciences team. This person will be responsible for quantitative, high throughput analysis of metabolites in small scale fermentation samples using an Agilent triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (QqQ) with RapidFire technology. These analyses will provide insight into the production of the products of interest, along with pathway metabolites and byproducts, which in turn will inform optimal strain construction, fermentation conditions and downstream processing techniques.
You will perform lab duties under the supervision and mentorship of senior analytical personnel. You will contribute to multiple projects daily and ultimately to the long-term success of the company. You will utilize your expertise in mass spectrometry and quantitative, high throughput small molecule analysis to support and help advance Genomatica’s sustainable chemistry platforms.

Develops high throughput mass spectrometry assays for fermentation derived product of interest titer and upstream metabolites and side products.
- Develops high-throughput plate-based sample prep procedures for product extraction from fermentation broth.
- Works closely with biology and automation teams to continuously improve the quality and scope of our analytical screening platform.
- Designs systems for routine monitoring of assay performance ensuring consistent reporting of dependable data, backed by statistical rigor.
- Balance work request across multiple projects according to company priorities, adaptable to change.
- Mentor junior level analytical chemists.
- Work safely with hazardous chemicals and waste.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
Experience
- >2 years of experience in an analytical lab post-doctorate required. Exceptional, non-PhD candidates with >15 years of post-baccalaureate experience may be considered.
- Experience developing methods for quantitating metabolites or other small molecules via mass spectrometry in a high throughput setting
- Experience with Agilent Rapidfire technology and Agilent triple quadrupole (QQQ) systems highly preferred. Candidates with a combination of LC-MS and automation experience will also be considered
- Experience with statistical analysis and design of experiments (DOE) a plus
- Basic knowledge of python or other scripting languages a plus
Knowledge Requirements
- Expert level understanding of analytical assay qualification using a systematic approach to identify factors that may influence overall data quality
- Ability to successfully perform in a fast-paced, high-intensity R&D work environment
- Ability to keep accurate records of experiments and data
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Microsoft office software proficiency
- Receptive to training and a quick study/highly adept

The pay range for this role is $105,000 - 133,000 annual USD. The final salary offered to a successful candidate takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience, education, training, and other business and organizational needs. Geno is a multi-state employer and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
