SUMMARY
The Researcher II shall provide the research support required to produce data spreadsheets, data releases, utilizing laboratory analyses, geographic information systems (GIS) technology and related geospatial data and database management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Participate with CNSS and client team of staff and scientists in conducting and accomplishing research assignments, including;
- Sediment core description and photographing
- Subsampling of sediment cores for analysis (sample splitting, sieving, sample dehydrating).
- Operate a Coulter LS-13 320 particle size analyzer, and other equipment to measure sediment grainsize and distribution in geologic samples.
- Operate other analytical equipment as needed to perform sedimentological and hydrological sample analysis, such as Loss on Ignition.
- Using Windows system software as well as other software (including Microsoft Office 365 suite products such as Excel) to collect and manage laboratory data.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and perform regular calibration tests.
- Write and/or assist with writing of formal USGS publications and/or laboratory documents that will accompany and/or complement data products.
- Assist with data summaries, statistical analysis, and display sample results.
SCHEDULE AND DELIVERABLES
Deliverables shall be provided to the technical representative and may include oral, written, or electronic documentation of data sets including but not limited to:
- Analyze geological samples, manage, and secure data.
- Generate spreadsheets graphs and other figures of data output as needed.
- Document sample and laboratory processing methods.
- Perform basic quality control/quality assurance methods on a case-by-case basis.
- Write and/or assist in writing data reports and other related documents.
- Provide analytical data for USGS reports or peer-reviewed journal manuscripts.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Marine Science, Environmental Science or related field is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of analytical systems in processing sediment samples (e.g., but not limited to grain size, LOI, water content), radiocarbon dating, and sedimentology.
- Knowledge of Esri ArcGIS software and Adobe Illustrator, etc. is desirable but not required.
- Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory work, data collection, data analysis Sampling and analytical protocols.
- Ability to successfully pass a drug screen and background investigation
- Attention to detail.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work will primarily performed in an office environment. This position is performed on site.
- Some travel might be required to support program tasks.
- Cherokee Federal has suspended it’s COVID mandate. However it’s important to note that Cherokee Federal employees are included as covered employees in U.S. Presidential Executive Order 14042, which mandates Covid vaccines for federal contractors. Executive Order 14042 is currently not subject to enforcement by the Federal government.
