Prince William County, Virginia, is seeking to hire a Roll-Off Crew Supervisor in the Solid Waste Division of the Department of Public Works. The position is located at the County Landfill in Manassas and leads a team responsible for the safe and efficient operation of roll-off trucks and other heavy commercial vehicles. This is a working supervisor position that assigns and supervises work, as well as operates commercial vehicles and performs other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma, a commercial driver’s license, a minimum of seven (7) years of full-time experience driving roll-off trucks, and at least three (3) years of supervisory or lead experience. ABOUT THIS ROLE:
This position works in the office and the field under the supervision of the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent. The work requires sound and ethical judgment and the ability to read, understand, and conform to regulations, rules, and procedures. Job duties include supervising employees; acting as back-up for employees as needed; safely operating a roll-off truck and other heavy commercial vehicles; establishing and tracking performance standards; ensuring safe work practices; coordinating vehicle and equipment operation, maintenance, and repair; scheduling and overseeing contractors; preparing, maintaining, and reviewing documents; and working cooperatively with other County staff and vendors. This position may act as the primary onsite supervisor in charge of the facility in the absence of other managers and superintendents. The job also requires frequent contact with the general public, including responding tactfully to customer questions and concerns.
PREFERENCES AND REQUIREMENTS:
A high school diploma or GED is required.- Minimum three (3) years of full-time work experience operating a roll-off truck is required; seven (7) or more years of full-time experience is preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of full-time supervisory or lead experience is required.
- Work experience in the solid waste industry is desired but not required.
- Work experience dealing directly with the public in a customer service setting is desired but not required.
- Possession of a valid Virginia Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
- Successfully completing and passing a pre-employment physical examination is required.
DESCRIPTION OF QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to effectively supervise staff, including assigning work and projects, reviewing work schedules, providing training and mentoring, establishing and tracking work standards, evaluating and documenting performance, writing reviews, counseling, and recommending disciplinary action.
- Ability to effectively organize, establish priorities, monitor, and complete work objectives and projects. Ability to gather and evaluate operational data and develop, implement, and monitor solutions to improve teamwork and efficiency and address operational issues.
- Knowledge and ability to safely operate commercial vehicles such as a roll-off truck, water truck, and rubber tire loader in close proximately to other commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, and private trucks and vehicles in order to complete assigned tasks in all weather conditions.
- Knowledge and ability to perform vehicle and equipment inspections and minor preventative maintenance.
- Ability to write, maintain, and review documents, including procedures, logs, records, forms, and reports.
- Ability to read, understand, and abide by all transportation and safety regulations and other applicable requirements, policies, and procedures pertaining to the assigned work.
- Ability to follow supervisor’s direction, work as a team, and communicate effectively and respectfully, both in writing and in person, with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
- Skilled in the use of computers and computer software, including the ability to use Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is considered to be essential. Responding to emergencies, inclement weather, and other issues that may impact facility operations outside of normal working hours, including holidays and weekends, is required.
The job requires having and maintaining a valid Virginia Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License and is subject to alcohol and drug testing and driving record checks. This job is a safety-sensitive position that requires wearing personal protective equipment at all times while at work.
The work is generally performed in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and may be exposed to vibrations, noises, dust, fumes, odors, and chemicals. This job is physically demanding and requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The job also requires manual dexterity, standing, bending, climbing, crouching, grasping, kneeling, balancing, pulling, pushing, reaching, lifting up to 75 pounds, and the ability to walk over rough terrain in inclement weather. The ability to safely work around vehicular traffic and heavy equipment is required.
SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:
Work schedules are determined based on coverage of facility operations, which are six to seven days a week. Working on either a rotating or fixed shift basis, which may include weekends, holidays, and overtime is required. This position is eligible for overtime and holiday pay.
Typical shifts for this position are Wednesday to Saturday OR Monday through Thursday. Drivers typically rotate shifts on a monthly basis. Shift days and hours are subject to change based on business needs. Working outside of normal facility hours with little or no notice may be required in the event of inclement weather or a department or County emergency.
ENTRY SALARY RANGE:
$28.72 to $43.08 per hour
As funding allows, this postion qualifies for a $3000 signing bonus. The bonus is payable in 2 equal installments during the first year of employment.
