ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER

Little Water Prep, a growing K-5 public charter school in Poughkeepsie, New York, invites passionate and revolutionary educators to apply to the position of Founding School Social Worker. JOB SUMMARY

Little Water Prep exists to provide the students of Poughkeepsie, NY with an educational experience that equips them with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to thrive in school and beyond. Our mission is to work in partnership with the community to provide a rigorous and affirming environment for all K-5 scholars through reflective data-driven teaching practices and a responsive curriculum that allows our scholars to recognize their power and have agency over their futures.

The Social Worker is responsible for supporting the emotional, social, academic and identity growth and well-being of students and families. Social workers play a vital role in ensuring our students succeed in school and go on to lead self-sufficient, successful, and happy lives.

SOCIAL WORKER RESPONSIBILITIES

Preparation, Planning, and Internalization

● Teach the knowledge and skills, nurture the confidence and character, and inspire the passion needed for our students to achieve their goals, live their best lives, positively impact the world, and feel a sense of belonging and pride in their school

● Value and draw upon students’ experiences and backgrounds to build lasting relationships
● Teach intervention groups and utilize a variety of instructional strategies based on the diverse needs of students

Performance Growth

● Set socio-emotional and academic goals with students and tracking progress towards those goals
● Manage aspects of referral process for social services, partnerships, and special education services, including

● Provide support and documentation for all students with IEPs
● Develop structures or assessments to measure student progress in intervention or counseling settings

● Analyze informal and formal student data, including how well students are gaining capacity in core values

● Conduct regular assessments of current and emerging student and family needs and utilize
Student and Family Experience Survey to provide supports

Compliance
● Provide regular one-on-one counseling or group counseling to students and families
● Provide tier 2 and tier 3 intervention
● Provide all mandate counseling sessions as mandated by IEP’s
● Manage, track, and document student interactions and counseling schedule
● Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and confidentiality when working with students, parents, and staff

Systems and Operations

● Reinforcement of all classroom systems supporting the Positive Recognition System
● Support when students are in crisis
● Communicate and partner effectively with diverse populations of students, families, and staff
● Consult with teachers and special education team to develop comprehensive supports and interventions to students who are presenting challenging behaviors.

● Assist with operational support of various school-wide systems to ensure safety and efficiency of scholar arrival, dismissal, and transitions

Development

● Serve as both a leader and member in the building of a collaborative, interactive and loving community of learners

● Create and participate in a professional learning environment to assure shared goals, outcomes,
Common Core alignment, objectives, benchmarks, rubrics, and continuity of skills and values in accordance with the school’s vision and mission

Resource

● Develop and maintain partnerships with external agencies
● Refer individuals and families to external resources and services and when necessary refer cases of suspected child abuse to the State Central Registry

● Design and coordinate student engagement, family engagement, and family education activities, including

● Home visits for newly enrolled and current students, as appropriate
● Workshops to educate families, staff, and/or students on specific issues

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

● Extensive knowledge of adolescent development
● Experience in therapeutic modalities related to children and families from the underserved communities, including assessment and treatment of trauma

● Experience working within a school environment or extensive work with teenagers and young adults

● MSW or Master’s degree in counseling-related discipline
● Deep knowledge of Special Education law, Section 504, Gifted and Talented, Response to

Intervention (RTI), and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) compliance and instruction and a proven track record of raising student achievement for exceptional learners.

● Strong familiarity and expertise with College and Career-Ready standards, Common Core State
Standards (CCSS)

● Ability to communicate with ethnically diverse stakeholders
● Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel
● Desire to continuously learn and increase effectiveness as a professional
● Founding spirit and the belief that you are responsible for all students and all parts of the school
● Unwavering commitment to LWP’s mission and willingness to go above and beyond to meet the needs of LWP students, families, and staff
● Skilled at analyzing, interpreting, and using data to collaborate, identify best practices and areas for improvement, and drive results
● Strong strategic and analytical skills with an aptitude for shifting from fire-fighting to systems-building
● Team player with strong interpersonal and stakeholder management and relationship building skills
● Ability to lead, influence, and hold others accountable to upholding high standards of operational excellence

Schedule

● Year-round position with general day hours of 7:00am-4:30pm
● After-hours and weekend events will be required and communicated in advance
● Full time, Non-exempt, 12- months
