The Company:

What if you could join an organization that creates and builds life sciences companies that invent breakthrough technologies to transform healthcare and sustainability?

Metaphore Biotechnologies is an early-stage biotechnology company with an ambitious and exciting mission: to reimagine drug discovery and vaccine design through the integration of computational and experimental innovation. The company is developing a revolutionary approach to this challenge and recruiting a team of top-tier scientists and engineers to build a powerful, first-in-category R&D platform.

Metaphore Biotechnologies is a product of Flagship Pioneering's venture creation engine, which has also given rise to companies such as Moderna Therapeutics (NASDAQ: MRNA), Editas Medicine (NASDAQ: EDIT), Omega Therapeutics (NASDAQ: OMGA), Seres Therapeutics (NASDAQ: MCRB), and Indigo Agriculture. Since its launch in 2000, Flagship has applied its unique hypothesis-driven innovation process to originate and foster more than 100 scientific ventures. In 2021, Flagship Pioneering was ranked 12th globally on Fortune's "Change the World" list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Scientist with strong experience in protein and/or antibody engineering, massively parallel assays, and next-generation sequencing to join our Antibody Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a track record of success developing sophisticated tools and innovative assays for the generation and sequencing of combinatorial variant libraries, as well as the high-throughput discovery and/or tuning of protein-protein interactions. Experience with multiple protein display systems (e.g., phage, yeast, mammalian) is preferred, as is experience with antibodies or antibody-like molecules such as nanobodies. This position will collaborate closely with experimental and computational R&D scientists to accelerate the platform across diverse therapeutic areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute multiplex assays of variant effect, from library design and construction, selection and next generation sequencing
  • Innovate on top of existing workflows towards developing novel library designs, display system formats, and screening methods
  • Characterize antibody variants by flow cytometry, BLI/SPR, DSF
  • Collaborate closely with the Computational Biology team to drive analyses of rich datasets towards deriving biological insights
  • Assist with coordinating team activities, including matrixed oversight of research associates and coops

Key Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in biomolecular engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field
  • Experience with biophysical characterization (BLI/SPR/ELISA)
  • Molecular biology experience including standard cloning and mutagenesis techniques, NGS library preparation, and mutagenesis
  • Experience with library-based display technologies (e.g. phage, yeast, mammalian) and screening methods
  • Computational experience (e.g. familiarity with data analysis using Python or R) is a plus

What we can offer you:

  • Opportunity to lay the scientific foundation of a transformative platform company as an early employee
  • Custom-tailored role to maximize impactful contributions, professional growth, and scientific interests
  • State-of-the-art lab and meeting space co-located with several other early-stage Flagship companies, right in the heart of Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA
  • Weekly lunches, monthly social events, and community lunchroom with free snacks, cold brew coffee tap, and assorted drinks

Values and Behaviors:

Flagship is an experiment in institutional, entrepreneurial, and innovation practiced in the context of a small company with an insurgent mindset. We are seeking individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit, strong communication skills, and comfort in working in and contributing to a dynamic and cross-functional team environment. The level of the role will be commensurate with the education and years of experience of the identified candidates.

Flagship Pioneering and our ecosystem companies are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.
Recruitment & Staffing Agencies : Flagship Pioneering and its affiliated Flagship Lab companies (collectively, "FSP") do not accept unsolicited resumes from any source other than candidates. The submission of unsolicited resumes by recruitment or staffing agencies to FSP or its employees is strictly prohibited unless contacted directly by Flagship Pioneering's internal Talent Acquisition team. Any resume submitted by an agency in the absence of a signed agreement will automatically become the property of FSP, and FSP will not owe any referral or other fees with respect thereto.
