Consistent with the university’s shared services agreement with the William & Mary Foundation (WMF), this position is assigned 5% effort to support WMF with the responsibilities outlined below.

Position Summary
The Senior Director of Regional Advancement, DC Metro is a leader on the regional fundraising team in the Office of Advancement at William & Mary. The Senior Director shall drive all fundraising activity on behalf of William & Mary in the region, comprising the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia, to ensure strong area-wide pipeline development from discovery to solicitation to gift closing. The Senior Director will interact closely with William & Mary Foundation Trustees and other volunteer board and advisory council members in the region and will also be responsible for developing thorough and comprehensive briefings for the President, Vice President for University Advancement, Associate Vice President for Development, and other university and development leaders.
As the DC Metro market leader, the Senior Director is responsible for soliciting gifts ranging from $100,000 to $5 million+ for fundraising needs university wide, with a focus on gifts at the higher end of the range. The Senior Director will work closely with alumni engagement regional team members assigned to the market to drive strategic engagement activities to foster ties between our alumni and the university. The Senior Director is responsible for communicating key messages and priorities while coordinating activity with leading academic campus partners. The Senior Director leads the building of a cohesive network of volunteers who are willing to articulate their personal support of William & Mary and the Campaign, in active engagement with fellow alumni and friends of the university.

The successful Senior Director will be a proactive and collaborative member of this dynamic regional team as William & Mary builds on its success through its strategic plan, Vision 2026, and continues planning for its next campaign. This position will be based out of the northern Virginia/DC metro region with flexible office space located in the W&M Washington Center on Capitol Hill.

Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Significant and progressively responsible experience in academic fundraising or a related field. (typically, 7-10 years).
  • Proven ability to identify, qualify and cultivate prospective major gift donors.
  • Expertise in drafting and executing creative individual and region-wide donor and prospect strategies to solicit and secure significant private gifts.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills that demonstrate fluency using persuasive language to promote visionary gift opportunities.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple and complex tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, including, but not limited to, collaboration, staffing and programming.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant and progressively responsible experience in academic fundraising (typically, 7+ years).
  • Management experience with proven leadership and management skills (typically, 5+ years).
  • Previous experience leading a regional or constituency unit fundraising team.
  • A affinity for William & Mary, its mission, history and unique focus on undergraduate research and a liberal arts education.
