Job Overview


The Senior, Trend Research and Forecasting will lead the macro/micro trend research, annual/seasonal/quarterly trend vision, and enterprise story-telling needs for Macy’s private and market brands in partnership with the Director of Trend.


The position requires a trend research expert with strong leadership skills, the ability to identify, study, and communicate macro trends, consumer behavior shifts, cultural influences, past/future zeitgeist impacts, and emerging style trends for Macy’s, and specific areas of focus in apparel, accessories, and home. The trend researcher and forecaster, has a natural curiosity and is able to synthesize information from a variety of resources into faceted ideas that support the greater needs of the business and trend strategy. This individual will successfully support trend strategies and ideas that align with Macy’s overall direction, customer base, and will be responsible for leading the trend research and forecasting for an individual area of business. The individual must be able to lead research strategies and collaborative ideations that result in consumable ideas that can be applied to brand and category-level design work. A strong ability to influence, story-tell, and gain trust to push new ideas into implementation will be key to the success in this role.




Essential Functions

  • Lead trend strategy, vision, and fashion application for an individual areas of focus in partnership with Director of Trend.
  • Support the overall Macy’s Trend strategy through supported research, aligned forecasts, and coordinated team focus.
  • Ability to synthesize information from a variety of resources into commercial ideas.
  • Ability to organize trend research functions and tools with regard to emerging trends through; curious observation, travel, trend service engagement, street-style, runway, art, and music.
  • Contribute to the development of Annual, Seasonal, and Quarterly trend forecast presentations that include Macro Influences, Color, Fabric, Artwork, Silhouette, and Styling Cues across Apparel, Accessories, and Home.
  • Supports the build of enterprise-wide story-telling and big-idea moments, experience-led ideas, and broad-based creative collateral that elevates Macys impact as a modern department store.
  • Effectively manages relationships with external trend services, and drives active engagement with the fashion and design community both internally and externally in partnership with Director of Trend.
  • Effective time management, individual workflow planning, team collaboration, and delegation across functions that support the trend strategy, and focused categories of business.
  • Lead and Influence Design, Merchant, and Vendor Partners, through effective and consistent communication, presentation materials, and authority in research and future-focused thinking.
  • Utilize Trend Curve philosophies to ensure commercial application, customer-segment alignment, and fashion pyramid balance.
  • Advise design and merchants on trend direction by brand, and ensure product design and selection aligns to proper interpretation of trend strategy.
  • Supports and works with Director of Trend on special project requests, and deep dive work needed.
  • Drives an engaging and collaborative culture both within the trend team, and also outside the team with all cross functional
