Position Overview: The SNAP Outreach Coordinator is a grant-funded role, to end June 30, 2024, on the Advocacy Team at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. The Supplemental Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the food stamp program, is the nation’s largest federal nutritional assistance program. It assists individuals and families with little or no income to buy food. In accordance with our mission, “leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our community,” the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore has joined in the nationwide effort to increase access to this critical nutrition assistance.

The position will collaborate with a team of professionals and volunteers working together to develop and implement comprehensive outreach strategies focused on increasing access to SNAP by understanding public policy, raising awareness about benefits for eligible, non-participating individuals in need, and aiding in applying for SNAP benefits. Most outreach strategies will be based on a mix of core components as outlined in duties and responsibilities below. The candidate who accepts this role will be required to attend a minimum of one on-site food distribution per week.

Work hours: Monday – Friday; part-time; non-exempt; some weekend and evening work required for special events, and out-of-town conferences.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop mastery of SNAP education, eligibility, outreach, application process, and support functions.
  • Conduct SNAP Outreach on the Eastern Shore of VA. Research and develop strategies and materials to reach vulnerable, hard-to-reach population in their daily lives, through trusted sources, and with Foodbank partner agencies and other community organizations to establish and maintain a community presence on the Eastern Shore; and support a coalition of community partners to increase access to SNAP in different ways.
  • Support SNAP Community Access Manager in identifying and leveraging relationships with partners to lead the successful execution of SNAP access/enrollment events.
  • Recruit, manage, and train community volunteers to conduct screening and application assistance to develop SNAP program materials and application assistance materials along with related trainings to community-based organizations on behalf of the FSEVA.
  • Increase Participation in SNAP Employment and Training Programs by identifying barriers to finding and retaining employment among SNAP recipients and engaging partners to address current factors impacting employment opportunities.
  • Engage in efforts to improve access to nutritious food options by enhancing awareness of the availability of utilization of benefits at farmers’ markets.
  • Represent FSEVA at community networking events and regional gatherings to promote SNAP awareness and collaborative efforts which address the needs of the food insecure.
  • Achieve monthly and annual performance goals. Provide recommendations for measurement of SNAP outreach that leads to access, specifically focused on impact in communities served.
  • Commit to and understand the FSEVA’s mission. This includes active participation in sharing the mission, vision, and values of the organization, internally and externally, creating a culture of active philanthropy for and through all staff.
  • Supervise volunteers during tasks/assignments and show/share responsibility for the overall Volunteers Experience at the Foodbank.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned or requested by the direct supervisor, department head or senior management.

Educational Achievement:

  • Associate degree in Human Services, Sociology, Social Work or other related field of study is preferred or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum: 2 years of experience in grassroots advocacy, community organizing and outreach, human services, with some oversight for managing volunteers.
  • Preferred: 3 years of experience working in a nonprofit, human service organization.

Required Skills, Abilities & Certifications/Licenses:

  • Proven ability to work in a professional team environment.
  • MS Office- Word, Excel, and Power Point proficiency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with database management.
  • Good judgement and discretion.
  • Experience in community outreach and event planning.
  • Ability to do basic analysis of financial data.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and demonstrate efficient time management.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy, and compliance with deadlines.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other Foodbank staff, volunteers, community organizations, donors, and vendors.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Skills, Abilities & Certifications/Licenses:

  • Knowledge of and experience with issues related to hunger, poverty, and nutrition.
  • Experience and comfort working with individuals from a range of age, economic and social backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Bilingual preferred; at a minimum, the ability to understand and make oneself understood to all Spanish speaking individuals.

Physical Demands: While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, when working in office or warehouse environment:

  • Lift weight or force be exerted up to 25 pounds when handling donations, documents, or files.
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); working with documents, computer screens and filing.
  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus when operating equipment.
  • Regularly required to talk or hear when communicating with employees and clients.
  • Use hands and fingers to handle or feel.
  • Reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand and or walk for extended periods of time.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Travel Requirements:

  • Local travel required.

Pay: Starting at $22.00/hour
