Responsible for performing clinical laboratory testing and other routine tasks associated with the department. Additionally, the SPECIALIST assumes a leadership role in the department assisting with various Quality Assurance protocols
Responsibilities:
- Able to process all clinical specimens through pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases (including pediatric, adult, and geriatric). Able to accept receipt of Irretrievable Specimens (i.e. Anatomic and Clinical Patholoogy) as per established protocols.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the CERNER Laboratory Information System through day to day use as well as any other appropriate special functionalities.
- Participates in laboratory Quality Control and Proficiency Testing programs.
- Performs routine and special procedures as applicable. Perform general laboratory instrument maintenance, repair and troubleshooting equipment problems.
- Assists with the department's Quality Assurance Program:
Quality Control
Preventive maintenance and repair of instruments
Correlation & linearity studies
Proficiency Testing
- Assists the Supervisor with evaluation of new instrumentation and/or methodology and assumes responsibilities as applicable with the validation process.
- Assists the Supervisor with annual budget preparations. Assumes responsibility as applicable for inventory control, capital equipment, etc.
- Provides leadership and expertise to the department staff as necessary. Serves as a resource to other technologists in regard to necessary actions for abnormal patient results, quality control issues, instrument troubleshooting, and other problem resolution situations.
- Takes an active role in teaching/mentoring students, new employees, and incumbent techs for cross-training.
- Must be able to take on Special Projects/Assignments/Tasks with minimum supervision.
- With a minimum of 6 years of experience, manages the department in the absence of the Supervisor
Requirements:
- NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license
- Bachelor of Science with minimum 5 years of experience
- Master’s of Science with 4 years of experience
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- LIS Required
- Microsoft Word & Excel Preferred
- Knowledge of hospital, federal, and state patient safety, infection control regulations and guidelines
- Able to work rotating weekends and holidays as needed
