THE TEMPORARY CAMP OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR will work with Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) and Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) staff to plan, develop, and implement activities that adhere to the museum’s student-centered, inquiry-based philosophy and utilize the museum’s indoor and outdoor spaces. Design activities that are appropriate for inter-age groups children. Assure safety and security of all campers during lunch/recess and post-camp, especially during sign-out, movement through museum facility, and snack time. Create schedules for post-camp staff, supervise post-camp staff ensuring that they implement age-appropriate activities, participate, engage, and interact with post-campers, and follow all safety procedures. Maintain physical space and supplies. Communicate with staff from CMOA/CMNH during weekly debrief meetings. Interact successfully with families of summer post-camp students.

Summer Camps take place June 5 through August 25. Candidates must have open availability through the entire season and will be scheduled in each of the eleven weeks based on enrollment. Candidates will be scheduled on a weekly basis -consistent availability Monday through Friday; 11:00AM – 5:30PM is required. Mandatory paid training days will be scheduled prior to the start of camp season

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • BA, BS or BFA or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years experience working with children including some supervisory experience; - Museum familiarity preferred but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrated success as a counselor/teacher in a classroom, afterschool, or camp environment for children, including some supervisory experience.
  • Strong verbal communication skills as well as ability to follow instructions independently; timeliness, and cooperative and congenial demeanor.
  • Must thrive in a team-oriented environment and work well with the public.
  • Understanding of classroom management, strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to perform well in a fast-paced setting.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Design and lead creative, afterschool-like activities that are fun and engaging for inter-age groups of children ages 6 to 13.
  • Monitor all students at lunch and recess to ensure the implementation of camp procedures, the appropriateness of conversation and play, and smooth transitions between activities.
  • Supervise camp operations staff in carrying out age-appropriate activities, ensuring that staff are actively participating, engaging, and interacting with post-campers and are adhering to all established safety procedures.
  • Assure safety and security of post-campers at all times, especially during sign-in/sign-out, movement through facility, and snack time.
  • Prepare for and clean up post-camp including daily organization of materials, maintaining attendance and other records, coordinating camper information binder, making nametags, preparing and cleaning spaces, inventory and storage of materials.
  • Create and maintain program assistants’ schedules and staff performance evaluations. Attend weekly consultation and debrief meeting with one or more direct supervisors.
  • Order supplies according to pre-approved budget; maintain supplies ensuring that all equipment, games, toys, and supplies are available, are used properly, and are in good working order.
The following PA Act 153 clearances, or proof of application of clearances, are required beginning employment and as a condition of continued employment: Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background Check Obtaining the required clearances is completed as part of the new hire process.
