Function

The Transportation Officer maintains the safety and security of the inmate(s) who are transported while protecting the general public.

Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Deputy of Court Services and is accountable for use of delegated authority.

Pursuant to §53.1-29 of the Code of Virginia and Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the Hampton Sheriff’s Office, the incumbent must qualify to carry and use firearms.

Pursuant to §15.2–1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.

Examples of Work

  • Demonstrates positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public
  • Transports prisoners to and from other institutions outside this jurisdiction
  • Responsible for safe parking of the vehicles
  • Shall be responsible for the total security of the inmates said officer is transporting from the time he/she assumes custody until said inmates are safely delivered into the custody of another authority
  • Picks up mental patients and transports to confinement locations
  • Provides security from disruption and violence in assigned courtrooms and on the premises of the Judicial Center
  • Is responsible for maintaining adequate security for the inmates under said officer’s control and to provide for necessary aid in the event of an escape or attempted escape of an inmate, illness or injury of an inmate, or mechanical problems of the officer’s assigned vehicle, or other unforeseen event.

· Shall become familiar with the locations of various institutions within the scope of this officer’s duties and the locations of various police agencies and hospitals in the surrounding areas in the event of an emergency · Shall contact necessary police or civilian aid as required for the purpose of assistance through the use of assigned radios or other means in the event of an unforeseen occurrence

  • The Transportation Officer shall perform any and all other duties as required or requested of said officer by Supervisors or Administrators with the framework of the Hampton Sheriff’s Office

·Compiles all paperwork as necessary as it relates to such duties and ascertain that it is done accurately and completely · Responsible for conducting vehicle inspections and reporting deficiencies

· Adheres to all policies, procedures, guidelines and directives of the office on an ongoing basis · Be dependable and meet acceptable attendance requirements at all times

  • Protect confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing
  • Disseminates information as it is given by the Department’s Administration
  • Follows all Federal, State and Local laws

Qualifications

18 Years old or older

High School Diploma, GED, or College Diploma

Requires an acceptable background check to include a local and state criminal history check and sex offender registry check Requires pre-employment medical evaluation, drug testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. Must maintain a current & valid VA driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (no greater than -2 driving points)

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, noise, fumes, odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, traffic and toxic or caustic chemicals. Risk of exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases and bodily fluids

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS

Must have the capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public. Must have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs; Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies. An annual medical physical and physical agility test are conducted for this position. Requires operation of firearm and standard office equipment.
