The Urban School and Community Education Coordinator is responsible for delivery of IslandWood’s school day programs, community events, and summer camps at the Brightwater Center in Woodinville, WA. This coordinator also mentors and trains seasonal urban programs educators, supports curriculum development, aids with strategic planning for the site, and is involved with larger Urban School Programs special projects. Responsibilities include limited evenings and occasional weekends.


The Brightwater Center, one of IslandWood’s Urban School Programs sites, includes a wastewater treatment plant, 70 acres of natural area, and a state-of-the-art learning center, laboratory, and exhibit hall. Brightwater school programs are designed for 3rd -5th graders and summer camps serve students from 1-6th grade. Both programs utilize the features of the Brightwater Center including the natural areas, exhibit hall, laboratories, classrooms, and the wastewater treatment plant itself.

Job Title: School and Community Education Coordinator – Urban Programs

Job Type: Full-time/Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday

Work Hours: Flexible schedule/32-40 hours per week

Pay Range: $24.00 to $26.00 pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

Location: Brightwater Center, Woodinville, WA, with travel to schools around the region and occasional meetings on Bainbridge Island .


Primary Responsibilities:

YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAM COORDINATION

  • Teach and support high quality, culturally responsive instruction in ecology, ecosystems, stormwater, wastewater, and technology to school age children, adults, and teachers.
  • Provide on-site day-to-day support to Urban School Programs Educators (both for school day programs and summer camps) by being available to substitute, stewarding program materials, providing radio support, attending to minor medical issues, and solving day-of logistical issues.
  • Teach post-program lessons at regional schools, coordinating with classroom teachers.
  • Coordinate with King County employees to ensure smooth relations between education, operations, and events teams at the Brightwater Education Center.
  • Collaborate with IslandWood staff and partner organizations to design education program curriculum (school day programs, community events, and summer camps).
  • Support and lead summer community tours of the Brightwater treatment plant.

PROGRAM REGISTRATION AND SCHEDULING

  • Coordinate with teachers, administrators, King County employees, and Urban School Programs Educators to ensure that all programs are scheduled and staffed appropriately.
  • Support the management of IslandWood’s online database (Salesforce).

LEADERSHIP AND EDUCATOR DEVELOPMENT

  • Co-Lead training of Urban School Programs educators with Program Manager.
  • Facilitate professional learning community and lead program debriefs with educators.
  • Design and deliver professional development workshops for seasonal staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in education, environmental education, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2 years teaching and/or education experience.
  • Minimum 1 year coordinating and/or supporting program logistics.
  • Environmental/Outdoor Education experience & background.
  • Effective and equitable problem-prevention and problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to support IslandWood’s work towards social justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Ability to lead and work on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people and communities
  • Must be able to comply with and maintain a drug-free work environment
  • Must pass child safety screening procedure; post-offer.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation (Brightwater is not accessible by bus).
