Job Summary
Utility and Energy Services encourages applications for a Utility Plant Maintenance Technician! This position performs highly skilled technical work in the maintenance, inspection, adjustment, calibration, and repair of District Energy Plant Systems (steam, chilled water, water, electric) and Combined Heat & Power facility equipment (33MW combustion turbines, 2MW steam turbine, and Heat Recovery Steam Generators).
This role performs maintenance on various types of heavy equipment and all auxiliary equipment, as well as maintenance on industrial mechanical systems safely and efficiently to restore or improve the reliability of the equipment being maintained.
Who We Are
Utility and Energy Services is responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, and repair of the campus’s energy generation and distribution infrastructure for steam (heating), chilled water (cooling), and electricity. We provide the campus community with reliable utility services in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner and offer measurement, line locating, performance engineering, regulatory and data management services.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Perform diagnostic, preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on heavy equipment such as combustion gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, industrial boilers, chillers, cooling towers, auxiliary equipment and systems.
- Maintain documentation of all maintenance for each piece of equipment using the Computerized Maintenance Management System, Asset Management Systems and Operation and Maintenance Manuals. Maintain daily communications between internal work groups
- Work with procurement to ensure parts, tools, consumables, and PPE are available for all maintenance related work to be performed.
- Perform general housekeeping to ensure the work site is kept clean and ensure all tools, ladders, and containers/materials are accurately stored.
- Assist in the maintenance of Utility Distribution systems. Assist with planned and un-planned Distribution Outage activities.
What You Should Know
- This position is designated as Essential Services. A designation of Essential Services means that the employee is required to report to work at times when the campus is closed due to fire, explosion, inclement weather or other emergency situations.
- This full-time, in-person position’s work schedule will be 4 days with 10 hour shifts from 6 am – 4:30 pm during the week, and will have on call responsibilities to respond to campus emergencies.

What We Require
- Must have a valid Driver's License.
- Four (4) years of experience with industrial or commercial chilling equipment and in the maintenance of equipment such as industrial power boilers, steam and/or gas turbine driven generators.
Or
- Three (3) years experience with graduation from an apprenticeship or technical trades school in a related field and one (1) year of experience with Computerized Maintenance Management or Asset Management Systems.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
- Candidate must successfully pass the CU-Boulder "Boiler & Chiller O&M Training Program" to become Certified in District Energy Plant Maintenance within one (1) year of hire date.

The ability to work independently and in a team setting.
What We Would Like You to Have
- Five years of experience in the maintenance of equipment such as industrial power boilers, steam and/or gas turbine driven generators.
- Three years experience with industrial or commercial chilling equipment.
- Training from a military, accredited institution, or graduation from an apprenticeship program on boilers, turbines, steam, energy, power, heat transfer and power plant instrumentation, control and monitoring systems.
