Overview:
Responsible for credit underwriting and portfolio management, to cover various industries within the wider Corporate and Investment Banking Coverage organization. This position will work with Relationship Managers (RM's) as a liaison from the division's Lending Management Group (LMG) to other departments to execute client opportunities for the Bank. This is an individual contributor role with an assinged portfolio of clients but will also work with junior staff on deal execution.

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $225,000 and $225,000. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Responsibilities:
Processes all transaction-related requests, such as amendments and waivers to existing credit documentation.
Drive the preparation of credit applications and customer on-boarding in conjunction with the credit department, the risk management department, and compliance.
Negotiation and review of credit and other transaction documentation, in conjunction with internal legal and other back office functions.
Execute, oversees and manage ongoing credit monitoring per internal policy, portfolio reporting, portfolio management, and credit cost oversight.
Stay abreast of industry / client trends and developments.
While this is an individual contributor role, there is an opportunity to train and develop junior staff in credit analysis, internal procedure and policy, transaction execution, and workload.
Leverage the expertise and capabilities of other SMBC businesses in alignment with the strategy of the Bank.
Relationship building across SMBC to obtain a detailed understanding of the overall needs of our corporate clients to facilitate seamless execution.
Drive an active portfolio management culture

Qualifications:
5-7 years of job relevant corporate banking work experience, experience as a credit analyst is strongly preferred.

Strong working knowledge and skill in banking product documentation, including structuring, proposing and negotiating loan documentation. Demonstrated ability to explain complex terms and agreements. Ability to solve / mitigate risk issues by investigating terms in credit agreements.

Advanced understanding of loan / deal closing.
Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with an ability to synthesize large amounts of information in a reasonable period of time and accurately assess complex information.
Expert user of MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Superior financial modeling/valuation skill.
Excellent Finance and Accounting skills, including an ability to read and interpret financial statements and an ability to apply knowledge in those areas to understand the overall lending and business environment
Demonstrated ability to execute complex transactions from beginning to end of the deal life cycle with limited to no supervision and to problem solve effectively.
Excellent communication skills and comfortable presenting in front of senior management. An ability to coordinate and communicate with various internal departments across the bank (middle/back office, global counterparts), with the objective of driving agreement. Effectively partner with other internal teams and product areas and viewed as being collegial and collaborative while driving transactions to completion.
Strong ability to organize thoughts, clearly articulate points, and provide summaries and explanations of complex transactions, verbally or in writing, to management or other internal departments. Demonstrated ability to make and defend credit decisions under scrutiny from senior management and internal auditors.
Demonstrates a excellent attention to detail and an ability to complete work accurately and in a timely manner against strict deadlines while managing multiple deliverables. Strong ability to notice discrepancies in data.
Strong knowledge of the full suite of corporate banking products (FX, IRS, Trade, Securitization, Supply Chain Finance, DCM, Leasing, etc.)
Thorough knowledge of credit risk analysis, credit administration, credit policy and procedures, and risk analysis including legal, compliance and US regulations pertaining to lending.
Demonstrates exceptional intellectual curiosity and an interest in continuous learning. Self-driven and motivated; takes personal ownership of specific assignments. Proactive decision-maker; must handle a high volume of credit intensive work and must take initiative in a highly time sensitive environment.
