JOB PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for External Relations, the Volunteer Engagement Manager’s primary responsibility is managing and supporting the school’s engagement with SDSS Advisory Council members. The Manager will handle all facets of the preparation for and execution of Advisory Council meetings, including meetings of council sub-committees, as well as for engagement activities for council members outside of regularly scheduled meetings. The Manager will be responsible for capturing decisions and action items from the council meetings and managing all resulting follow-up. Many of the SDSS Advisory Council members have multifaceted relationships with Stanford, and as a result, the Manager will work closely with colleagues in Donor Relations, Principal Gifts, and Development, as well as faculty leadership, the Dean and his Chief of Staff, and the volunteers and their teams to provide an exceptional volunteer experience. The Manager will also contribute to strategies for moving philanthropic engagements forward with council members.
In addition to the Manager’s primary responsibility of managing the school’s main advisory council, the Manager will also manage and support volunteer efforts for the Sustainability Accelerator and a forthcoming new Institute for Sustainable Societies, and they will provide coordination between and support for other volunteer groups within SDSS.
CORE DUTIES:
- Create and implement a plan for a multifaceted engagement strategy with the SDSS’s highest-level volunteers, working closely with colleagues within the school and across Stanford, and the volunteers themselves.
- Ensure that all appropriate stakeholders are involved and that all policies and internal procedures are followed in our engagement with these top volunteers, working closely with Principal Gifts and Donor Relations staff, recommending actions and helping resolve complex issues.
- In support of SDSS Advisory Council meetings, and the meetings of any subcommittees, coordinate the preparation of agendas, presentations, and materials; manage meeting logistics and execution; capture decisions and other important conversations in the meetings; and coordinate or execute all meeting follow-up between meetings within the context of a comprehensive volunteer engagement strategy. Perform a similar role for the Sustainability Accelerator advisory group and the new Institute for Sustainable Societies.
- Provide coordination between and support for other SDSS volunteer bodies, including advising on the formation of new advisory groups.
- Represent SDSS within the university on volunteer management matters.
- May oversee, direct, or supervise staff as needed to support the school’s engagement with the SDSS Advisory Council and its members, and other volunteer groups.
- May develop and/or oversee budgets, and manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience in administrative and volunteer management, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills including conflict resolution.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong financial expertise in budget planning and financial forecasting.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong expertise in business and management.
- Strong knowledge of volunteer management practices and other relevant subject matter expertise.
- Previous fundraising experience strongly preferred.
The main work location for this position is Stanford University Historic campus.
The expected pay range for this position is $118,000 – $175,000 per annum.
