The Loudoun County Health Department is seeking a talented and highly motivated WIC Lactation Outreach Assistant to work in a diverse, exciting, and fast-paced environment.

The WIC Lactation Outreach Assistant (Breastfeeding Peer Counselor) promotes breastfeeding as the preferred infant feeding method to pregnant WIC participants.

• The counselor will facilitate prenatal breastfeeding education classes and breastfeeding support classes within the WIC department.
• The counselor contacts new pregnant participants to provide anticipatory guidance and contacts postpartum women to discuss breastfeeding progress and/or issues.
• The counselor must complete WIC Breastfeeding training through Peer Counseling Training Program and Skills Checklist; meet a minimum of 4 hours of lactation management training annually to enhance knowledge of breastfeeding skills; attend local, regional, or state breastfeeding promotion activities and training when possible.
• The counselor is a part of the nutrition services team and works closely with WIC staff.

Other responsibilities include answering office phone, scheduling WIC appointments, processing online WIC applications, and determining WIC eligibility. Screens and assists with electric breast pump loan arrangements according to WIC policies. Follows-up with families and makes appropriate referrals within the medical health system and to community resources.

Hiring salary commensurate with experience.

High School diploma or equivalent; some experience in customer service and with automated systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

• Bilingual English and Spanish language capacities.

• Complete USDA, FNS WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum training and associated activities within ninety (90) days of hire as part of the orientation to the Virginia WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program.
• Obtain any Department-required certifications within established time frames of hire.
• Successful candidates need to travel throughout the district as required/assigned.
• Flexible schedule to respond to participant requests by walk-in or phone or as needed.

Pass pre-employment background checks including criminal, fingerprinting, credit, CPS, and DMV checks. Valid driver license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification).
