Position Title: Tutor
Supervisor's Title: Director of Wilmer Writing Center
Session: Academic
Hourly rate: $11.25 per hour (Level 2-Specialized Classification)
Average hours per week: 7 to 9 hours a week

Job Purpose:
To supply help to undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students who are having trouble writing or who need encouragement to improve their writing skills, their writing process and/or their control of grammar.

Skills Development and Learning Opportunities Available:
Writing tutors learn how to sharpen their own writing skills, their understanding of the writing process and learning styles, and their communication skills. Moreover, they sharpen/develop communication skills. Through reading other students' works, writing tutors learn about subjects that are not necessarily studying.

Essential Duties:

  • Writing tutors help students generate, develop, and polish their writing.
  • In order to do this successfully, tutors need to know (or be ready to learn):
  • What makes a good paper
  • How the writing process works (brainstorming, prewriting, drafting, revising, editing)
  • How to effectively evaluate, incorporate, and contextualize evidence
  • How to identify and correct problems in grammar, punctuation, diction, and style
  • How to explain and teach grammatical principles
  • Help students develop their writing skills
  • Facilitate various writing center services related to the teaching of writing over the school year
  • Complete other writing-related tasks as assigned by the writing center director, for example reviewing the contents of Wilmer Writing Center's web page or preparing for conference presentations
  • Attend weekly tutors' meetings for ongoing job training
  • Give presentations during weekly training meetings (once a semester)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Specific Skills:

  • Appropriate speaking habits for the academic community; sociable personality, which includes a willingness to work constructively as part of a team that serves students and relates to faculty members; professional attitude, which includes self-motivation, responsibility, and the desire to improve one's work performance on an on-going basis

Educational Requirements:

  • Overall GPA of 3.0 at time of application, to be maintained above 2.5 while working in the Writing Center; excellent credentials in writing shown by passing the tutor test, writing a coherent, nearly error-free impromptu essay or providing a recently completed piece of evidence-based academic writing; and faculty recommendation

Experience Requirements:

  • Generally, students who apply have successfully completed a college writing course (Composition)
