This is an AmeriCorps national service position. It is contingent on funding and open until filled. Designated by NOAA in 1994, Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (https://olympiccoast.noaa.gov/) is one of the nation's most treasured ocean areas, and home to a rich abundance of marine mammals, seabirds, fish, and thriving invertebrate communities. The area occupies a maritime cultural landscape that has supported humans since time immemorial. We aim to protect the Olympic Coast’s natural and cultural resources through responsible stewardship, to conduct and apply research to preserve the area’s ecological integrity and maritime heritage, and to promote understanding through public outreach and education. The AmeriCorps service positions will promote a better understanding of Olympic Coast's natural and cultural resources through public outreach and education, and help to protect the resources through responsible stewardship volunteer activities. Starting in spring of 2023, until the positions are filled, NOAA seeks to recruit two qualified individuals through Washington Service Corps AmeriCorps, whose diverse backgrounds, experience, education and skills will advance NOAA’s mission.
Member Duties : The service of AmeriCorps is required to implement K-12 education and volunteer stewardship activities. These activities will allow OCNMS to reach approximately 2000 individuals. Tasks and responsibilities include: (1) To plan, implement and evaluate K-12 education programs using the concepts of Ocean and Climate Literacy (https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/literacy.html), Next Generation Science Standards, and best practices for NOAA B-WET Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences (MWEEs) (https://www.noaa.gov/office-education/bwet); (2) To assist sanctuary staff, in partnership with Washington CoastSavers, to plan and coordinate regional beach cleanups, including recruiting and training volunteers and beach captains; (3) To conduct public outreach and community engagement with local service and interest groups as well as at prioritized community events, such as Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival, Beachcombers Fun Fair, Grays Harbor Shorebird Festival, and regional career fairs.
