Accounting Manager, Cash and Sales & Use Tax

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will support Cash and North America Sales & Use Tax Accounting areas. The Accounting Manager, Cash and Sales & Use Tax will report to the Senior Manager, Accounting. This position will play a key role in completing accounting and reporting activities and ensuring compliance in the areas under cash and sales & use tax.
Analysis and Interpretation – Accounting and Financial Reports
- Manage processes for Cash and Cash Equivalents accounting
- Interpret transactions performed or proposed by business to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, including performing research and partnering with Technical Accounting to develop guidance
- Analyze financial results and provide explanations to management for the movements of Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flow statements
- Preparation of supporting documentation for sales & use tax filings to external consultants who prepare the filings
- Review the sales & use tax filings
- Manage month-end accounting close process, prepare account analysis, variance analysis, and ensure financial controls and quality standards are met
Business Partnering
- Work with Finance and Operational teams in performing accounting tasks and monitoring the successful execution of Month End close activities, including but not limited to review of journal entries and account reconciliations
- Interact and work cross-functionally with a wide range of internal business partners, including FP&A, Global Asset Planning, Global Strategic Sourcing, Corporate Tax, Disbursements, and provide tax support and guidance as required
Internal Controls and Compliance Process support
- Support the documentation and test of controls in support of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Certification and other control verification processes. Draft deficiency reports as applicable and drive implementation of remediation actions.
- Support Internal/External/Tax audits by timely providing backup, explaining transactions, and answering inquiries, as applicable.
- Understand and interpret Policies and Procedures to provide guidance to partners on proper application of controls.
- Operational Improvement, Automation and Project Management
- Collaborate with process partners to determine and implement continuous improvement opportunities that will enable an efficient and effective accounting close process.
- Engage in gaining knowledge and deploying Automation and Reporting solutions (e.g. UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Anaplan, Tableau, Alteryx, MS Teams, Smartsheet, DocuSign) to reduce transactional work in favor of strategy and analysis.
- Manage special projects for which Global Accounting representation is required, including company expansion, business acquisitions and divestitures, and financial system implementations.
Vendor Services Management
- Partner closely with our External Services vendor (offshore) supporting accounting operations to complete close activities and deliver quality services to Amgen.
- Engage in regular governance meetings to discuss status of activities, projects, and issue resolution. Monitor Service Level Metrics and manage expectations and deliverables.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree
OR
Master’s degree and 2 years of tax experience
OR
Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of tax experience
OR
Associate’s degree and 10 years of tax experience
OR
High school diploma / GED and 12 years of tax experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4+ years of corporate or public accounting experience
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or MBA
- Audit or Big 4 Public Accounting experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of property tax and sales & use tax
- Strong written, verbal communication, and presentation skills and be able to bridge culture differences
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently, multi-task and prioritize
- Strong project management skills
- Leadership skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Experience with SAP and BW, Hyperion, EDW applications

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $89,395 -
$107,569.
