Superior Fresh is an industry-leading aquaponics facility specializing in organic leafy greens and Atlantic salmon. Our Wisconsin facility is situated on a private 800-acre Native Restoration Preserve nestled in the picturesque Coulee Region. Our state-of-the-art, land-based recirculation aquaculture system is the first in the United States to raise Atlantic salmon. In conjunction with salmon, Superior Fresh grows the highest quality organic produce in an ultramodern hydroponics greenhouse. As an Aquaculture Technician you will be responsible for the daily operations and duties in the aquaculture portion of Superior Fresh, raising Atlantic salmon for consumption. Aquaculture Technicians are responsible for stocking, caring for, and harvesting fish. All operations will be done in accordance with the company HACCP and food safety plans, strict bio-security measures, and Standard Operating Procedures. This position will be responsible for all life stages of growth for Atlantic salmon and the associated systems in which they will be raised.
Primary Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Implement Good Agricultural Practices in daily duties and responsibilities.
- Participate in egg incubation and fry rearing in the aquaculture facility.
- Feed fish, remove mortalities, and care for aquatic species in the aquaculture facility.
- Monitor daily water quality data.
- Implement existing and new practices developed by Management.
- Perform harvests for both species in accordance to company Standard Operating Procedures.
- Use best judgment and reasoning in assisting with company decision making.
- Relay information regarding issues with system operation and general issues to the Aquaculture Assistant Manager.
- Record daily data and other pertinent information in digital/written form in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures.
- Enter and compile data for assessment by the Aquaculture Assistant Manager.
- Provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
- Maintain reliable attendance.
- Actively participate in meetings, training, and education. Assist with training other employees and providing backup.
- Complete other assignments and special projects as requested.
Aquaculture Technician Qualifications and Expectations
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required
- Bachelor’s degree in aquaculture, biology, fisheries, or related field, preferred
- Knowledge of aquaculture or aquaponics and having worked in an aquaculture facility or in a fisheries related field, preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to perform under strong demands in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to encourage the building of mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members.
- Ability to attend onsite and distant training seminars and classes to bring new ideas and practices to Superior Fresh.
- Ability to delegate tasks effectively to proper individuals to ensure workload balance and proper job completion.
- Effective time management and organizational skills.
- Work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Analytical and problem solving skills.
- Handle multiple projects simultaneously within established time constraints.
- Ability to set priorities and to work with minimal direction and supervision
- Proficient computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Internet
- Must be able to lift materials weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Work indoors and outdoors, as well as in and around water in varying climatic conditions.
- On-call with other employees.
- Work will include some weekends and holidays.
- Must be flexible and willing to work extended hours when necessary.
- Work in remote/rural environment.
