The Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science is a community of people committed to tackling some of the world's biggest challenges. The college is home to the three academic departments: Computer Science, Information Science, and Statistics and Data Science, and is committed to pushing boundaries in the information age through its commitment to both developing state-of-the-art computing and information technologies, and in studying and understanding the societal and human impact of these technologies.


Cornell Bowers CIS is responding to tremendous growth in student interest by investing heavily to increase its faculty—with a goal to increase by 50% over the next few years, as well as increasing its staff infrastructure, including its communications team. Growth will allow the college to foster research excellence, expand critical and emerging fields, and increase opportunities for cross-disciplinary and university-wide collaboration.


Cornell communicators share a mission to enhance and preserve the university’s brand and reputation as a top research institution and a leader in higher education, and to support and promote critical programs that serve the university’s teaching, research, and public engagement mission.


Communication services are carried out through a matrixed organizational system in which University Relations houses the departments of News (Cornell Chronicle), Media Relations (pitching and servicing media requests), Brand (cornell.edu, multimedia production, brand management and governance), Strategic Communications (communications plans, key messaging, social media management), and Cornellians (digital alumni publication).


Communicators in colleges, schools, and units regularly collaborate with, and consult, University Relations departments. University Relations serves as a partner and resource for all college/unit communicators.


What You Will Do


The Brand and Creative Specialist is an integral part of the Cornell Bowers CIS communications team and will develop graphic marketing and design materials to promote events, market the college and programs and manage the use of the college brand. They are responsible for day-to-day college and department web content, accessibility, and governance and will assist with social media content and monitoring. Working closely with the University Relations Brand Office, they will maintain brand standards that are in alignment with the college/unit and University’s strategic vision and mission across all platforms as well as integrate the brand promise, vision, and position into all forms of marketing and communications.

Duties include:

  • Creative Services—creation of communication and marketing materials for the college; brand management; photography; etc.
  • Website and accessibility—maintenance of website contents and accessibility; assistance with website management; website interaction and engagement analysis; etc.
  • Content Creation and Asset Management—newsletter management; production of photography, video, and audio assets; Social Media Ambassador role; social media administration, digital screens/AppSpace administration; etc.
  • Assisting with major college events and other assignments related to the college’s changing priorities.


What We Need


  • Bachelor’s Degree with at least three years of experience related to design and brand management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent design portfolio.
  • Good writing, editing, proofreading as well as research and organizational skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong and collaborative working relationships with key constituencies.
  • Ability to devise creative solutions.
  • Strong experience working with social media channels, Drupal, and WordPress.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.


What We Prefer


  • Experience working in an academic environment.
  • Experience with email-generating systems, such as Constant Contact.

  • This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The position will typically allow for the flexibility to work remotely a maximum of 4 days per week at a location of employee’s choosing within the United States. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
