Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce a competitive opportunity to serve as a part-time Business Assistant in our Central Office Traffic Operations Division on the Traffic Operations Program Management Office team.
The selected candidate will be skilled in business support functions with a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office 365. The successful candidate will assist in the Traffic Operations Business Office with business support functions such as budget and finance tracking, purchase order creation, expense report preparation, invoice processing, and other diverse administrative and support duties as assigned. This position will be part of a team of business professionals that collaborate in many business functional areas within the Traffic Operations program, and in support of VDOT's mission and values. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, and a positive minded team player with the ability to work independently.
This position is an Hourly/Wage position. Hourly(wage) positions may not work more than an average of 29 hours per week and cannot exceed 1500 hours during the wage employment year (May1-April 30. This position does not include health insurance, retirement or leave benefits.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of accounting practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of budgeting principles and practices.
- Working knowledge and experience in administrative support duties.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply state laws, policies and procedures.
- Ability to prepare and analyze financial information and prepare accurate status reports.
- Knowledge of procurement practices and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Ability to solve problems and make decisions.
- Ability to understand and comply with records management and retention procedures and schedules.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in business or accounting preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree.
- Administrative experience coordinating a variety of business functions for a designated program area.
- Experience with Cardinal and Small Purchase Credit Card processes.

- VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request with coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided with an emergency operations assignment.
