CAMIO Language Specialist (Remote)

The University of Pennsylvania's Linguistic Data Consortium is seeking Language Specialists in multiple languages to join our data creation team.

The CAMIO (Corpus of Annotated Multilingual Images for OCR) Project is building data sets for development and testing of cutting-edge computer vision technology in dozens of languages including:

  • Arabic
  • Hindi
  • Japanese
  • Kannada
  • Russian
  • Tamil
  • Urdu
  • Vietnamese

As a CAMIO Language Specialist, you will work closely with team leaders to annotate images of digital text in your language. Annotation tasks may include drawing boxes around specific image features like tables or individual lines of text, transcribing the text that appears within each box, checking the quality of labels produced by other workers or automatic processes, and validating translations for transcribed images. Each task will follow detailed procedural guidelines and utilize a custom web-based interface. This work could lead to significant advances in optical character recognition and related technologies.

The ideal candidate will have native speaker fluency in one of the specified languages and experience with image annotation. Candidates must have outstanding attention to detail, strong communication skills, and be able to work independently in an academic research environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform image annotation including drawing bounding boxes around lines of text and/or document zones, transcribing boxed images, labeling features of boxed images
  • Perform quality control by checking annotations, transcripts and translations produced by other workers and/or automatic processes for compliance with guidelines, accuracy and completeness
  • Work with team leaders to improve annotation guidelines and training materials
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Native speaker fluency (reading and writing) in one of the following languages: Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Kannada, Russian, Tamil, Urdu, or Vietnamese
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English
  • BA/BS or equivalent professional experience
  • Prior experience with linguistic annotation; image annotation experience preferred
  • Outstanding attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Must be reliable, responsive, efficient, proactive, and self-motivated
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and meet firm deadlines

This position is fully remote and requires a regular weekly commitment of 10-20 hours. The work hours and schedule are flexible. All applicants must reside in the United States and be eligible to work for the University of Pennsylvania. The CAMIO project is expected to last up to 6 months.
