The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Art and will be responsible for developing initiatives to complement, enhance, and build on the prestige of current undergraduate and graduate programs, raising the visibility of the Department of Digital Arts within Pratt and the larger community. The Department of Digital Arts has a 35-year history in the artistic application of innovative technologies. It is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 animation schools in the country and one of the top 3 on the east coast. As a result of its focus on both fine arts and commercial careers, the department has alumni who have won Academy Awards, Emmys, and Guggenheims. Undergraduate and graduate thesis works have won numerous film awards, including Student Academy Awards. They have also been collected by significant institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The department offers a BFA in Digital Arts with three tracks (2D Animation, 3D Animation, and Art & Technology), a BFA in Game Arts, and an MFA in Digital Arts with areas of concentration in Interactive Arts and Animation and Motion Arts. The diverse department community includes over 300 undergraduates, 50-60 graduate students, 8 full-time faculty, 60 part-time faculty, and a support staff of 6. The department's facilities are located in purpose-built spaces with over 300 computers, a well-equipped resource center, a greenscreen room, an audio recording studio, an experimental animation studio, a spatial computing lab, an arcade, and facilities for imaging, 3D printing, and laser cutting.

Job Responsibilities:

Department Chairs play an important role as both administrators and educational leaders at Pratt Institute. The responsibilities of the Chair require excellent organizational abilities and may include:

• managing growth and providing academic leadership for the department in accordance with the strategic goals of the Institute;
  
  
  
• developing with faculty, department curricula, and other educational programs and activities;
  
  
  
• leading department-level Program Learning Outcome assessment and periodic comprehensive program review;
  
• recruiting, hiring, supervising, and mentoring faculty and staff;
  
• supervising and managing their departmental budgets, learning spaces, and related resources and equipment;
  
  
  
• assisting with student recruitment and advising;
  
  
  
• managing conflicts if they arise and addressing student concerns;
  
  
  
• participating in the outreach efforts of the Institute to alumni and the community, the region, and predict and respond to transformative changes in the field on multiple levels as a practical operational leader and also as a thought leader.
  
• Candidates should possess the leadership and organizational abilities to steer high-profile showcase events such as gallery exhibitions and screenings.
  
  Salary Range: $120K - $160K
  
  Qualifications:
  Education:
  
  MFA or equivalent in a related field is required.
  
  Experience:
  
  Leadership experience, an innovation mindset, plus 5 years or more teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  
  Substantial experience with curriculum development and a solid record of professional activity in digital arts with knowledge of media theory as it relates to the digital arts.
  
  Familiarity with research in related fields and relevant industries.
