POSITION DESCRIPTION AND BOARD EXPECTATIONS:
The Muskegon YMCA seeks a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to build upon a solid foundation of strong financials, innovative responses to community needs and a highly regarded seasonal camping program. The new CEO will join a dynamic and proven leadership team, committed staff, and thriving programs.
Seeking an effective leader with at least 5 years successful executive level experience, a diverse pool of candidates and welcoming applications from outside the YMCA or non-profit sector. Preferred candidates will have demonstrated success in fiscal management, business development, board and volunteer development, community relations, staff management, and fundraising and have a passion for and commitment to healthy living, environment and service, for all.
The successful CEO must be committed to the mission of the YMCA and uphold its values and ethics, as well as be a persuasive spokesperson on its behalf. To summarize, we seek a leader with the insight and skill to effectively lead a vibrant organization into a new era of inclusive, responsible, and sustainable growth.
The CEO will provide executive leadership to the YMCA and, in partnership with the
Board of Directors, is responsible for its strategic direction and success. The CEO will lead the organization in achieving its mission, including overseeing its financial stability, community and philanthropic relations, staffing, development, and operations, under the policies, directives and guidelines established by the Board of Directors. Philanthropy. The Y board seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas:
· Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Work effectively with volunteers, community leaders, and key staff, to create and develop a strategic plan that addresses the needs of the communities served by the Y and includes defined organizational strategies, a clear implementation plan with deliverables, and measurable goals.
· Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the communities we serve. Develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders and partners from diverse backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure our Y is seen as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other.
· Improve Operating Performance Through Strong Fiscal Management:
Lead the organization through post-pandemic recovery and revitalization by maintaining the ability to adapt and scale programs to shifting needs and opportunities. Use high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends and ensure growth. Quickly address financial issues that may arise. Develop the budget and drive operations to surplus annually. Empower and guide staff to achieve financial milestones.
· Make Progress as an Inclusive, Anti-Racist, Multicultural
Organization: Intentionally promote inclusion in all aspects, ensure and sustain diverse representation in leadership, and lead social change through anti-racist policies, words, and actions.
· Build and Lead Staff Team: Ensure a talent development system is in place and executed in an affirming, culturally competent and effective manner.
Work toward recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting staff that represent the diversity of the communities served. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission and purpose.
Create a learning organization to help staff achieve their highest potential.
Starting Salary Range: $103,000-$111,000
Benefits: YMCA Retirement Plan contribution is 12% paid by employer. Individual medical coverage provided at 70% paid by employer/30% paid by employee. Paid time off is based on years of experience. Relocation assistance may be provided.
Residency Expectation: It is desired that the CEO live proximate to the service area and will have an in-person presence in the community.

Required Candidate Criteria:
1. A degree from an accredited 4-year college or equivalent experience.
2. Minimum five years prior leadership experience in a senior management role.
3. Successful track record in developing and strengthening community relationships and strategic partnerships.
4. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via Y-USA Training and
Leadership Development criterion).
5. Experience developing new programs and reviewing and enhancing programs being offered for both economy and effectiveness in broadening engagement in the communities served.
6. Fiscally sound business management approach and proven track record of budget oversight and fiscal management of at least $2M in operating revenue.
7. Excellent leadership and communication skills (both written and verbal) as well as personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
8. Fundraising experience in annual campaign, endowment, and grant management.
9. Experience working with a nonprofit Board and volunteer leadership structure.
Preferred Candidate Criteria:
1. Possession of a graduate degree.
2. Experience in nonprofit or social service sector.
3. Experience operating multiple sites in diverse communities.
4. Experience operating a year-round resident camp.

The Muskegon YMCA, is a non-profit organization dedicated to Building a Healthy
Future for Muskegon through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility through its mission To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The YMCA first opened in Muskegon in 1871 and has a rich history of programs and activities. Though the initial startup was not sustainable, the Muskegon YMCA has been a constant in
Muskegon since 1916. The YMCA and the YWCA of Muskegon merged in 1972 and in
1979, the YMCA moved to 900 West Western. In 2015, the facility was sold and completed the shift in focus from fitness and memberships to Community Health with an office headquartered in downtown Muskegon and multiple outreach sites throughout
Muskegon county. YMCA camping began in 1923 with YMCA Camp Pendalouan located on beautiful Big Blue Lake. The Y Learning Center opened in June 2021.

Like nearly 200 other program-focused YMCAs across the country, we address current community health and wellness needs where they are most prevalent – at sites throughout the community. Our Y serves over 10,000 individuals annually through outreach programs at sites throughout Muskegon County and through summer and school year camps at YMCA Camp Pendalouan.
Currently, the Muskegon YMCA is Building a Healthy Future for Muskegon through signature YMCA programs such as Safety Around Water (SAW) - water safety instruction for area third graders, MYST - Muskegon Y Swim Team, Healthy Out of
School Time (HOST) - physical activity and nutrition education in and out of school hours for area youth, employee wellness programs, and all things camp at YMCA Camp
Pendalouan. The YMCA provides nutrition education for children and families through various programs. The Y Learning Center is a licensed childcare center serving all income levels in Muskegon. In addition, the Y provides evidence-based programs for chronic disease prevention and management including YMCA Diabetes Prevention
(YDPP)---including management for most Y’s throughout the state, Livestrong with the
YMCA - a cancer survivor’s fitness program, Blood Pressure Self Monitoring (BPSM) for those dealing with hypertension, and Healthy Weight and Your Child (HWYC), a lifestyle change program for the whole family.
Approximately 173,000 people live in Muskegon County. Approximately 81% are
Caucasian, 14% are African American, 6% Hispanic, 1 % Native American, and 1 %
Asian with 3% having two or more races. Approximately 50% of the population is female; 25% of the population is under the age of 18; the median household income is

9 are male. The bylaws were updated in 2022. The Y has additional volunteers who support the YMCA through programs and services.
· Staff: The YMCA employs 18 FT staff, 41 PT staff and 32 seasonal employees.
· Direct reports to CEO: The CEO has 4 direct reports. This includes the COO,
Administrative Coordinator, Associate Executive Director of the Community Y,
Y Camp Pendalouan Executive Director.
· Facilities: We have a rented central office in mid-town Muskegon; Y Camp
Pendalouan; The Y Learning Center o The office is home base for five full time employees as well as three full time employees through a shared service agreement with another local YMCA. Programs are run in the community, where the people are, or virtually. o YMCA Camp Pendalouan on the shores of Big Blue Lake offers a quiet, rustic setting and unparalleled service for groups from throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes region. We are located near
Muskegon, Michigan, on over 150 acres of mature oak-pine forest, adjacent to the Manistee National Forest and the White River.
Summer camps, seasonal events, weekend camps, school programs, and group retreats highlight our great camping program at
Pendalouan. As a YMCA camp, we have access to national standards for developing character as well as a host of other assets. We maximize our resources through soliciting and acting on parent evaluations, following state guidelines, and maintaining the highest possible standards established by the American Camp Association. o The Y Learning Center partners with parents to grow healthy, happy children, ages six weeks to school age. At the Y Learning Center, infants develop trust and security, toddlers learn to explore, and preschoolers learn the skills needed to be successful in school. We provide children with a safe and nurturing environment filled with opportunities to grow and explore the world around them with caring professionals. Our center provides a safe, warm, caring, and fun setting that stimulates kids’ natural curiosity and encourages personal expression.

· Financial Position: The 2023 budget is $2.6M. The Muskegon Y has no debt, manages an impressive portfolio of grant funding, has a modest endowment fund, and maintains annual reserves for facility and camp improvements. Cash flow and reserves are used to fund regular maintenance and capital improvements.
