Job Summary:

Responsible for the confidential and discrete investigation of claims originating from work actually or allegedly performed by Middlesex Water Company and subsidiary personnel and contractors. Includes, but not limited to, initiation and completion of investigation and root cause analysis of claims originating from construction, maintenance, inspection, operations, theft-of-service, high-bills, criminal mischief, tariff, and regulatory excursions, under the direction of the Risk Services Manager. The successful candidate will be passionate about supporting and driving the Company’s Values, RIGHT: Respect, Integrity, Growth, Honesty and Teamwork.

This position responds to alleged and/or confirmed claims.

Work Performed:

  • Originates and completes risk reports including root cause analysis and recommends corrective action; reviews risk reports completed by others for completeness and root cause analysis.
  • Conducts actual, in-person investigations and coordinates investigations and remedial corrective actions with supervisory and/or Dispatch personnel in Operations.
  • Takes immediate remedial and/or corrective action to address or correct matters when doing so can be done safely and efficiently (typically within 30 minutes); examples include, but are not limited to, notifying/coordinating with local law enforcement, filing formal complaints in municipal and/or small claims court and providing material witness and expert testimony at scheduled hearings, completing/correcting an inaccurate or incorrect markout, stopping a meter or hydrant leak, reconnecting a loose meter touchpad wire, requesting that Dispatch call a hydrant out of service, conduct internal leak inspections for customers, wrapping valve box lids with friction tape and reinstalling, tightening a loose curb box lid/meter pit lid. Followed by the creation and completion of an appropriate FA, where applicable for record purposes or additional follow-up.
  • Attends pre-construction, project and progress meetings, as needed; plan and schedule assigned claim investigations.
  • Provides material witness and subject matter expert testimony, as needed.
  • Recommends modifications to existing programs and procedures to improve system reliability and reduce liability.
  • Contributes to the overall safety awareness throughout the Legal-Risk Department.
  • Assist in contingency planning and response coordination of emergency situations.
  • Promote a friendly work environment, encouraging and guiding personnel, as needed. Be a positive role model for employees in appearance, conduct and attitude.
  • Communicate with the Company’s customers, public, and all other parties in a responsible and courteous manner.
  • Work on projects/other duties as assigned by the Risk Services Manager.

Qualifications (Minimum):

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years experience in Transportation and Distribution, Operations, Maintenance, Construction.
  • W-2 Public Water Distribution System Operator license or higher, desired.
  • Ability to read, understand and use GIS, CC&B, WAM, MWM, construction plans and distribution system maps.
  • Availability for emergency call-in and on-call assignments, as needed.
  • Be able to work independently, with little supervision. Excellent organizational skills, with sound technical writing and recordkeeping skills.
  • OSHA-related training required for this position.
  • Residency within 50 miles of the Company’s water distribution system.
  • Intermediate computer skills, Oracle, Word and Excel.
  • Valid Driver’s license.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders, enter/exit confined spaces, enter in and out of excavations.
  • Able to work outdoors on a year-round basis, including inclement weather.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, sit for extended periods of time.
