Clinical Psychologist - Naval Medical Center San Diego


Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park encompasses several mesas and canyons to the northeast, surrounded by older, dense urban communities including Hillcrest and North Park. To the east and southeast lie City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. To the north lies Mission Valley and Interstate 8. The communities north of the valley and freeway, and south of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, include Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo. Stretching north from Miramar are the northern suburbs of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Rancho Bernardo. The far northeast portion of the city encompasses Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley, which holds an agricultural preserve. Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights occupy the northwest corner of the city. To their south are Torrey Pines State Reserve and the business center of the Golden Triangle. Further south are the beach and coastal communities of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach. Point Loma occupies the peninsula across San Diego Bay from downtown. The communities of South San Diego (an Exclave), such as San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, are located next to the Mexico–United States border, and are physically separated from the rest of the city by the cities of National City and Chula Vista. A narrow strip of land at the bottom of San Diego Bay connects these southern neighborhoods with the rest of the city.

Responsibilities:


Clinical Practice:


The position evaluates, diagnoses, and treats patients who evidence the full range of disorders described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), or more current accepted standard and functions as an authoritative source of information regarding the use and interpretation of psychological tests. Clinical duties include: conducting psychological assessment of patients with a wide variety of known or suspected psychological disorders that affect intellectual, cognitive, behavioral or emotional functioning; monitoring, approving, and documenting clinical treatment plans and clinical records in timely fashion; providing staffing for clinical cases, including in emergency consultation and crisis scenarios; performing psychotherapeutic intervention or environmental modification based on scientific, evidence-based practice, or other community-accepted standard of care; functioning as an authoritative source of information regarding the use, selection, and interpretation of psychological tests; overseeing, administering, and interpreting appropriate psychological tests; monitoring, maintaining, and securing test instrument inventory and raw testing data; providing consultation regarding testing and interpreting issues; evaluating test results for preparing diagnostic summaries; appropriately managing confidential patient personal healthcare information.


Services occur in a multidisciplinary context, and as such the incumbent participates as a member of treatment teams as assigned.


Develops/Implements Therapeutic Treatments:


Conducts individual and group short-term therapy sessions, including psychoeducational sessions, using expert knowledge and therapeutic techniques. Responsibilities include: reviewing and approving the appropriate modality of each patient; developing treatment plans; evaluating overall effectiveness of therapeutic efforts using both objective and subjective measures, instituting changes as needed; utilizing diverse and complex therapeutic techniques or combination of techniques based on the specific needs of the patient with emphasis on short-term psychotherapeutic model; supervising paraprofessionals in the implementation of therapeutic interventions; participating in the multidisciplinary treatment where the advice and counsel provided is given weight by peers within and outside BUMED and making treatment recommendations to staff and resident physicians of other departments; applying new concepts and techniques to the most complex cases; integrating behavioral health assessment and treatment in the primary care setting and providing individual, conjoint, and group psychotherapy; establishing liaison with line commanders, military and civilian agencies, and community resources as necessary to ensure continuity of care for patients; providing consultative opinions to other health professionals on various topics related to the psychology of the patient, including how patients may be expected to respond to treatment.


Training, Education and Administrative Work:


The position is an active member of the training faculty providing development, oversight and teaching of classes. In addition, provides expert oversight of training in diagnosis and treatment to certified and intern counselors in the Department. Responsibilities include: providing oversight and expert direction to nurse providers, unlicensed psychology interns, psychiatry residents, and paraprofessionals; and conduct peer supervision and/or review of records; executing performance initiatives (PI) through revision of clinical standards and procedures; conducting briefs to hospital executive and medical staff; performing special actions and a variety of program administrative duties; evaluating and revising standard operating procedures; developing, approving, and executing the professional business plan; conducting program evaluation; reviewing data provided in reports of special actions; directing budget priorities; directing manpower surveys; briefing reports to the command and higher headquarters; reviewing statistical data to modify program goals; evaluating and approving educational packets; etc.
