The Associate Director of the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion (CMEI) is a creative and passionate student affairs professional who operates from a lens of understanding and prioritizing racial equity in working with MSU Denver’s diverse students. The Associate Director is primarily responsible for leading CMEI’s racial justice programming and administering an inclusive and equity-oriented space for students and collaborates with the CMEI team to design, deliver, and evaluate CMEI events and programming. This individual is also involved in promoting equity and cultivating student engagement in other related areas and regularly collaborates with campus constituents across the university to advance the university’s mission and strategic plan. The Associate Director is a strategic and student-centered thinker who is also skilled at developing effective professional relationships with individuals and departments. The Associate Director reports to the Assistant Dean/Director of the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion.

As the lead professional responsible for the CMEI racial justice programming and inclusive community space, the Associate Director is a creative and thoughtful student affairs professional who can collaborate with key constituents to identify and execute strategies to both broaden and deepen student engagement at the University through co-curricular programming and services. To this end, the Associate Director is adept at developing, assessing, and shifting policies and practices that directly or indirectly impact student engagement and student sense of belonging. The Associate Director is an active collaborator with academic departments and student affairs functional areas to enhance and strengthen existing programming within the University community, and to promote the development of new programming where it currently does not exist. The Associate Director is responsible for the supervision of the Assistant Director of First-Generation Initiatives, the Assistant Director of the Brother to Brother Program, the CMEI equity programming student staff and graduate assistants; leads their training and development, and is both innovative and strategic in setting the overall programming agenda for the CMEI.

Duties/Responsibilities
60% – CMEI Programming Space & Co-Curricular Event Management
  • Responsible for the overall administrative, budgetary, and personnel needs of the CMEI programming space at the University. Ensures that this space and its programming centers racial equity, cultural identity, and operationalizes social justice within the applicable context and considers equity and justice in fiscal strategies impacting multicultural engagement and inclusion.
  • Responsible for oversight and management of CMEI cohort programs including First-Generation Initiatives, Brother to Brother, Sister Circles, Salazar Scholars, Corky and Geraldine Gonzales Spirit of Tlatelolco Scholars, and the Latin American Educational Foundation (LAEF) Scholars.
  • Manages and conducts ongoing assessment and reporting of existing programming, identifies service gaps, and works with campus constituents to deliver robust, intentional programming that advances the University’s overall strategic plan and strategy to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in CMEI, CESA, Student Affairs, and Office of Diversity and Inclusion as well as with academic Deans, department chairs, and faculty to ensure integration of academic co-curricular programming across the university.
  • Intentionally works with relevant student organizations, including those focused on students’ social identities and the intersections of identity, to coordinate programmatic work in meaningful ways. As needed, works with CMEI colleagues to cultivate student leadership to support existing organizations and to develop and support the formation of new student organizations.
  • Coordinates and implements equity programming including but not limited to Heritage/History Months and Specialty Graduations.


20% – Supervision and Operations
  • Provides excellent supervision for two professional staff who support program operations and CMEI Graduate Assistants who will work with various CMEI staff and campus partners to design and deliver programming, initiatives, services, and opportunities to support and create conditions that empower historically underrepresented student populations at MSU Denver (i.e. Black, African/African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Latina/o/x, Native American, and Indigenous Students).
  • Recruits, hires, trains, evaluates, and holds employees accountable to performance expectations.
  • Monitors allocated budget and expenses.

10% – Assessment & Reporting
  • Tracks student participation, assesses student learning, and manages data for all relevant program areas, and in other areas related to student engagement, as requested.
  • Regularly communicates (and reports) on student participation and outcomes; does so with disaggregated information on relevant student demographic characteristics including gender identity and race/ethnicity.

10% – Related Other Duties
  • Actively participates in committees and working groups related to equity and student engagement and supports the development and implementation of equity and diversity education and training on campus.
  • Leads and/or contributes to special projects and/or initiatives, as requested that relate to equitable student engagement.
  • Participates in training and relevant professional development activities to support professional and/or departmental growth. Works to operationalize and/or integrate learning from these trainings into the work unit and work processes.
  • Is an innovator, a disrupter, and a change agent for racial equity and student engagement. Strives to recognize inequities in the work and in oneself and commits to address them. Seeks out opportunities to take calculated risks in support of a more engaged and equitably supported student community at MSU Denver.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Three or more years of experience working in a student support capacity in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with underrepresented populations (first-generation, low-income, racially/ethnically diverse student populations, etc.)
  • Experience with equity and racial justice program development, management, and execution
  • Experience supervising professional and student staff and providing performance management

Preferred Qualifications
  • Specialized Degree in higher education administration, student affairs, education leadership, counseling, social work, or a related field
  • Experience working with faculty

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience conducting program assessment or program evaluation for improvement
Work Hours
M-F 8:00am-5:00pm
Some evenings and weekends may be required.
