Job Title: Coding Specialist

Reports to: Business Office Manager and Administrator

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision apply the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual medical records according to the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and adhere to the Official Coding Guidelines.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Duties/Responsibilities:

· Utilize ICD-CM and CPT references to assign appropriate codes to all inpatient and outpatient medical records.

· Code completed medical records within 3 days of discharge.

· Follows coding guidelines established by CMS, AHA(Coding Clinic), AHIMA, etc.

· Checks CMS Local Coverage Determinations on Medicare patients, as needed, for billing edits.

· Queries physicians for clarification of diagnoses when information in the medical records is ambiguous, unclear or conflicting.

· Determines the proper sequence of diagnoses and procedure codes.

· Assist with end of month and CQI tasks as needed.

· Reads all outside resource material, as required, to stay abreast of coding changes.

· Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

· Computer literacy, knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical medicine, surgical procedures, diagnostic tests, radiology, pathology, pharmacology, and the various medical specialties as required in areas of responsibility.

· Ability to work under pressure with time constraints and be flexible to meet coding demands.

Education and Experience:

· High school diploma or equivalent required.

· Successful completion of a certified coding program preferred.

· One to two years of hospital coding with ICD-CM and CPT experience.

· Registered Health Information Technician or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred.

Physical Requirements:

· Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

· Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at a time.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour
