The Communications Specialist is responsible for assisting in the City of Buda"s social media engagement, digital communications, and community relations that involve event planning and program coordination that positively promote City of Buda, its projects, programs and standing with its core communities nationally. The Communications Specialist will work closely with the Director of Communications to leverage City of Buda"s social media and digital communications (electronic newsletters, podcasts, etc…), media presence and other communications activities, and assist with monitoring and updating pages within the City of Buda"s website. The Communications Specialist must be capable of working well independently and with staff. It is expected that this position will assume a high level of professionalism and be able to maintain confidentiality.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Communications and Social Media
Manage City of Buda"s social media presence and engagement. Assist in developing strategy for initiating any additional social media platforms. Monitor social media platforms daily, initiating and/or maintaining an appropriate level of engagement and addressing concerns with the community.
Write City of Buda-related content, take or secure photography and video clips, secure links to "legitimate" news sources for social media engagement and digital communications.
Assist in writing, editing and proofreading content for various communications, including electronic newsletters, social media platforms, podcasts, blogs, vlogs, the City of Buda website and editorial content from any internal staff.
Disseminate and track e-communication campaigns through online media monitoring services such as Constant Contact or other e-marketing dissemination tools.
Ensure appropriate City of Buda branding and consistency wherever City of Buda maintains a communications presence, in electronic newsletters, social media platforms, podcasts, blogs, vlogs, website and other written communications.
Respond appropriately (exercising good judgment) to inquiries from the core community in a timely manner - moderating and de-escalating contentious chatter. Through acquiring a strong working knowledge of City of Buda, and/or with the assistance of in-house subject matter experts, address inquires accurately.
Assist in serving as a social media liaison with internal staff, ensuring that internal staff follow established social media policy. Suggest appropriate changes to social media policy to comply with company changes and broader legal rulings that may become established as necessary.
Act as City of Buda"s social media ombudsman, identifying issues/trends in community comments that may require addressing in a more strategically coordinated manner.
Report social media, website and digital communication analytics with tools such as social media analytics respective to each platform and Google Analytics as well as electronic/digital-communications platforms such as Constant Contact, Meltwater or Cision, etc…
Perform other duties as assigned.
Logistics
Organize logistics for City of Buda"s administration-originated events that promote City of Buda"s image and community/public awareness activities.
Assist internal staff with event logistics (securing venues, volunteers, cleanup, etc.) for meetings, trainings and such events.
Network with internal staff and external peers and community members with respect to planning, coordinating and executing City of Buda events.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Possess a bachelor"s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or closely related field.
Possess a minimum of three (3) years of experience in communications, and/or coordinating digital/social media engagement, marketing, and/or community relations.
Possess a year of industry (work in village, city, county, state or federal government) experience.
Special Qualifications:
Prefer candidate to possess working knowledge of Associated Press Style.
Prefer candidate to be proficient on a variety of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Nextdoor, etc…).
Prefer candidate to possess skill in operating digital camera equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be detail oriented, possessing excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, with a working knowledge of Associated Press Style.
Must be computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access, Teams, etc…) and various Internet browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer) and working knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite software (InDesign, PhotoShop, Premiere, Animator, etc…) and in video/audio editing software such as Anchor, SquadCast, and Audacity for podcast development, social media clips and community engagement.
Must be proficient on a variety of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Nextdoor, etc…) required.
Knowledge of new and emerging trends in communication media and technology.
Knowledge of city council-governed municipal entities, with a general understanding of ordinances and policies.
Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
Ability to maintain high standards of confidentiality and professionalism conducive to representing City of Buda Administration.
Skill in using computers for data entry.
Skill in using computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes.
Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Skill in use of computer programs for producing publications.
Skill in delivering public presentations.
Skill in working effectively and efficiently with limited supervision.
Skill in reading and comprehending city policies, budgets, goals, and programs.
Skill in reading and understanding a wide variety of media sources, professional development materials and communication.
Skill in writing and editing news releases, newsletters, website text, scripts, reports, advertisements, pamphlets, letters to the editor, and other forms of written communication; applies appropriate style guidelines.
Skill in editing/updating websites.
Ability to work remotely, upon approval.
Soft skills in communication, team player, flexible, problem solver, accepting feedback, possessing confidence and creative thinking.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light and includes exerting up to 25 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects and the following physical abilities: fingering, hearing, mental acuity, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work typically is performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. Presence at fire scenes, hazardous material incidents, or crime scenes to talk to the news media. Must have a flexible schedule for potential after-work hours and weekends for any news or press releases to the public. Must be able to supervise intern(s) and manage stressful work demands.
