Position Overview:

The Central Sterilizing Technician is responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following infection control practices.

Essential Functions:

a) Cleans, disinfects, and racks instruments to be sterilized.

b) Maintains sterility by routine testing of equipment.

c) Understands use and uses caution when using the Sterrad, Sterizine and Steam Sterilizer.

d) Has intimate knowledge of Universal Precautions.

e) Assists in policy making for department

f) Maintains sterilization records for department

g) Works with entire Central Sterilizing team to constantly update and improve sterilizing techniques and processes.

h) Stays current in knowledge by becoming certification through IAHCSMM or CBSPD and learns from in services, conventions and reading.

i) Is a sterilization expert in the hospital.

k) Is able to use preference cards to pick surgical case supplies and equipment.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands along with fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Qualifications & Skills:

a) Education: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

b) Certification: Must be willing to become certified within two years of employment.

c) Job Knowledge and Skills:

i. Must be conscientious regarding procedures, capable of working under pressure and interacting professionally with other departments within the hospital.

ii. Able to accept new ideas and learn position duties.

iii. Must be willing to learn and gain a familiarity with medical terminology and

nomenclature of items and equipment used by the department.

iv. Knowledge of cleaning and sterilization procedures and techniques.

v. Conscientious regard for proper technique.
