Director of Communications, Downtown Partnership of Baltimore

The Director of Communication is responsible for the management and creation of compelling, brand-centered content across all channels and marketing mediums. This individual will help drive the internal and external narrative of the organization and ensure quality control and consistency of brand messaging, setting the tone for how consumers perceive brand content wherever they experience it. Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, the Director of Communications will work closely with the Operations, Business Development, and Economic Development teams to expand the reach of our messaging through compelling brand narratives.

Essential Functions:
  • The Director of Communications is responsible for creating & implementing strategic communications tactics to increase messaging and awareness of Downtown Partnership of Baltimore objects, advocacy, and initiatives, as well as Downtown attractions, retailers, restaurants, events, and living Downtown.
  • Create a content calendar and strategy for internal and external communications milestones.
  • Implement strategies for an internal communications plan.
  • Lead the speech writing and talking point development process for the DPOB President and other leaders of DPOB. This will include researching and drafting speeches, talking points, and other externally facing communication materials; coordinating with senior leadership across departments to develop communication materials; and supporting the President and DPOB leadership to maximize the impact of public appearances.
  • Draft, edit, and clear written content for websites, newsletters, reports, op-eds, articles, formal letters, and marketing materials. Coordinate with senior leadership within the organization and significant external parties to edit and refine materials, ensuring that all written communications align with DPOB's communications strategy.
Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Works closely with operations, economic development, business development, and admin teams to create brand stories and tell the successes of DPOB and DMA.
  • Develop a text message-based communication program for all departments to increase efficient and effective communications with target markets.
  • Manage brand voice across platforms, working closely with the Marketing & Communications Manager on implementation.
  • Creates branded presentations, maps, graphics, storyboards, creative briefs and other presentation materials for all departments as needed.
  • Content planning and writing for reports, including State of Downtown, Annual Report, Economic Impact, Housing Study, etc.
  • Oversee the execution of multimedia projects, including photography, video production, and virtual/live-stream events.
  • Plan and manage webinar series and/or podcasts to create brand communications opportunities and benefits for members and stakeholders.
  • Create a long-term strategy for growing a community of advocates for our brand and demonstrate what value we can create for the business.
  • Coordinate special projects as deemed appropriate by the Chief Marketing Officer
  • Support communications and messaging efforts for Downtown Partnership events and promotions.
  • Attends DPOB events to support staff and document events through still/moving images and social media content.
  • Represents DPOB at meetings and events that may influence the development of Downtown branding.
  • Oversees specific project budgets, coordinates budgeting with VP of Communications, and manages accuracy and payment of invoices related to Marketing & Communications.
  • Writing advertising copy for B2C and B2B ads
  • Create internal communications funnel through the implementation of an internal company newsletter and other tactics as designed by Director.
  • Participates in company-wide events and programming, including Annual Meeting, State of Downtown Breakfast, Charles Street Promenade, and the Lighting of the Washington Monument.
Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years experience managing brand and marketing campaigns
  • Minimum of 5 years experience writing for a non-profit, government, or association
  • Strong writer, familiar with targeting messaging, content, and writing style for different audiences
  • Proven ability to identify, target, and reach multiple audience segments using a variety of tools
  • Demonstrated ability to move the needle of success, with extensive experience collaborating with other teams
  • Experience promoting public and private events
  • Ability to establish and maintain credibility and trustworthiness
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Ability to be clear and direct in both written and verbal forms of communication
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preference for marketing, advertising, or communications, with seven years of professional work experience
  • Demonstrated brand management experience in a Small and Mid-sized Enterprise
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and Salesforce preferred
  • Extensive experience with presentation and visualization skills, including Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Canva, WordPress, Eventbrite, email platforms, QR codes, and survey platforms
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Baltimore City metropolitan area residents preferred
  • Internal DPOB candidates require completion of a successful six-month experience indicated by a lack of disciplinary actions
Supervisory Responsibility

  • This position doesn't oversee staff but oversees brand voice and communications messaging across all teams.
Position Type/Expected Work Hours

  • This is a full-time exempt position on-site at DPOB – 20 S. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21202
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as the job duties demand.
  • The role reports to the Chief Marketing Officer.
Physical Demands

  • This position supports a variety of Downtown Partnership of Baltimore programs, including outdoor events.
  • Regular use of arms, hands, and fingers in a range of duties, including use of a computer keyboard, telephone, and copier
  • The ability to perform the job function successfully requires vision levels to include close, distance, and peripheral vision.
  • The ability to traverse uneven terrain and carry objects up to 30 lbs is required.
  • The physical demands described here represent those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
