Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree
  • Massachusetts DESE License - Director/Supervisor
  • Minimum five years experience as a classroom teacher
  • Experience in educational leadership
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to work with students who are not meeting local promotional requirements.
  • Ability to exhibit the qualities of leadership essential to the successful administration of alternative education.
  • Experience working in alternative adolescent education systems
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students, parents and community.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality, good judgment, and tact.
  • Knowledge of effective employee supervision and evaluation procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of curriculum concepts and materials pertinent to secondary education.
General Duties:
Under the direction of the Superintendent, serves as the educational leader and chief administrator of all of the District’s alternative pathways. The Director will coordinate with the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning and Executive Director of Student Services on all aspects of the alternative instructional programming; organizes, directs, supervises and evaluates all site personnel; participates in staff, student, and community activities; and oversees school plan and operations.
Specific Duties:
  • Oversee provision of services to ensure the use of evidenced-based practices with fidelity as well as alignment with the vision and initiatives within the district (e.g. Strengths Based Approach, Trauma Informed Instructional Practices, standards-based curriculum, etc)
  • Hire, supervise and evaluate staff within alternative pathways
  • Coordinate professional development for staff within alternative pathways and coordinate PD with district administrators for building based staff (as identified through students referred for programs)
  • Establish, direct and monitor the referral process, entry and exit criteria for all pathways.
  • Establish and monitor data systems for students within each of the alternative pathways to determine effectiveness of social-emotional, behavioral, and academic interventions
  • Develop and oversee budget for alternative pathways
  • Seek out, coordinate and implement service projects, project based learning activities, and credit recovery opportunities
  • Create community partnerships to support experiential learning, wellness, and vocational skills
  • Act as liaison to the Courts in matters of violence, substance abuse and attendance.
  • Take initiative and think flexibly to create unique learning programs based upon student need
  • Create meaningful and empowering relationships with families to support continued engagement, assist in the preparation and dissemination of appropriate school to home communications; facilitate parental conferences
  • Connect students and families to various community partners for support programs and develop and implement life and career workshops for students
  • Develop guiding principles for re-engaging students with the district.
  • Conduct a comprehensive study of existing and potential alternative programs for the district to ensure programs meet the needs of all students.
  • Seek out, write and manage grants to provide opportunities and support for alternative pathways.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Work is not sedentary and is not limited to one location. Work requires in-district travel between schools as well as occasional out-of-district travel. Work requires direct contact with staff, students and community members. The nature of the position requires hours beyond the regular school day. It is expected that the person filling this position will give priority to completing the necessary tasks and set hours accordingly.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Classification:
