POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Director of Education and Training is responsible for running high-quality training and education programs for all advisors centrally and in the schools, including pre-major faculty advising when appropriate, and creating and maintaining professional development plans for all advisors. This position will also be connected with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), identifying regional and national opportunities for engagement with the office and staff to ensure continued professional development for all in the office and integrating best practices into the university advising system.

The Undergraduate Advising Support Office within the Division of Student Affairs’ goal is to provide timely and accurate advice for students on their academic journey through Case Western Reserve University, connecting them to other resources of support as needed to allow them to successfully complete their academic degrees.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Support Advisor Development. Collaborate with the advisors to create and maintain professional development opportunities. This may include organizing workshops, conferences, and training sessions. Meet with advisors periodically to help them track progress and success. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs and services, making recommendations for improvements and adjustments as needed.
  • Develop educational and training programs, virtually and in-person, to ensure that all advisors at all levels understand nuances and depth around the academic programs and degree requirements, as well as connections to holistic student support needs in the Division of Student Affairs offices such as career planning, research, etc.
  • In partnership with the dean of undergraduate advising who will be working with Faculty Senate, understand the needs of pre-major faculty advisors and training required to best use the resources of the Undergraduate Advising Support Office.
  • Work collaboratively with the associate deans in the office to understand changes within the schools and colleges around academic programs so that information can be included within training and education opportunities.
  • In partnership with the University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education, provide training for undergraduate training assistants in regard to advising and academic policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with University Technology and Teaching Learning and Technology to understand emerging technology and how best to train advisors on the use of that technology.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures related to professional development and continuing education programs including accreditation requirements and regulations.
  • Respond to inquiries from parents and/or family members or others about students and requests to access/review student records (in compliance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines).


NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other duties as assigned.


CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with dean of undergraduate advising for exchange of information, consultation, and decision-making. Daily contact with other assistant/associate deans and members of the technical staff to understand professional development needs and training needs. Daily contact with department assistant who supports the work of this position. Regular contact with the Division for Student Affairs as training and education is developed and delivered that touches multiple offices within the Division.

University: Regular contact with Deans, Chairs, and faculty and staff of assigned School/college departments to understand how best to develop training and education efforts throughout the institution. Strong coordination with the Provost Office offices managing faculty engaged with the GER and required student engagement activities to build timing and content of education efforts.

External: Occasional contact with representatives of other universities and non profit programs, as well as student affairs professional organizations to understand trajectory of the field.

Students: Occasional contact.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision on staff.


QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 5 years of experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education.

Education: Master’s degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the director of education and training’s specific responsibilities; prefer Doctoral degree in a related field.

  • Experience with program evaluation and data analysis, with the ability to drive improvements and decision-making.
  • Knowledge of accreditation requirements and regulations related to professional development and continuing education programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to support and challenge a diverse population of high-ability undergraduates.
  • Ability to apply independent judgment and decision-making skills to issues related to university policies and procedures.
  • Proven success working in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to assimilate and communicate information to a variety of audiences.
  • Proficiency in current software applications: electronic calendar, word-processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint, email, Zoom, Adobe products, database (preferred); and ability to quickly learn the Student Information System.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.


WORKING CONDITIONS

This position will be 100% in-person, with flexibility built-in to manage life events and seasonal workload
